Can some Morgan gurus please comment on the grading of this coin and what it might be a fair price for someone looking for this coin in this grade? Price is $625. Thanks for any replies.
Do you think it should have graded 63? $625 is $50 over the PCGS price guide but I guess you know that already.
Going only on the photo, if the seller is who I think, you should be able to negotiate this one down. As for grade, I would not feel comfortable basing any opinion on the provided single side image.
I did. I think it looks nice for a 62. The picture is not the best - it's overexposed. Problem is this is a bargain comapred to anything on e-Bay or some of the other sites... And this is a counter offer price - I offered $525 which I think is fair. the site shows previous prices paid but I'm not sure if they include a BP. I would guess not as they are nice even increments ($550, $575, etc.).
^^^^^ agree strongly with Books. Need to see both sides of the coin. Based on the obverse, it looks like a 63 coin but that is only half of an opinion. It is a very nice coin, regardless of the outcome of the situation.
Correction - I offered $575 and the counter was $625. It's one that I "need' and I like it, I'm just not sure I like it for over PCGS price guide, which itself tends to be a little high.
"Needing" a coin is a reason I left US collecting and its absolute set mentality. Collect what you like AND you believe is fairly priced. The thrill is in the hunt, not the conclusion. If you believe its overpriced versus today's market, (and I find PCGS prices very high retail), move on and wait until you find one you are more comfortable with. No sense rushing a hobby.
What you offered is the going rate, and looking at Heritage, the recently sold 62s all look better than this one. I'd pass.
I was just about to say the same thing. I think this coin is not a strong 62 and most of the coins on HA have been selling in the $580 range and look a lot nicer. I'd pass too.
The obverse is MUCH nicer than the reverse--I would have actually thought the coin to be AU 58 based on that messy reverse at the top of the coin. It is a strong strike, but I think that the 62 grade is actually generous, given all the contact marks on the reverse--has the coin been minimally circulated???? So, given a 63 obverse, and an AU 58 reverse, I would say 60 or 61 looks more realistic.
I would agree with this assessment. My initial impression of this coin (which I didn't see until after the second set of images was posted) was an MS61 coin which may have gotten a point bump due to being a CC Morgan.
