As far as investing in Morgan's for long term, as others have said, no one knows what the market will do. My gut tells me the market will be flooded with Morgan's in the next 20-40yrs as we 40+ year old collectors die off and heirs dump them for cash. Look at any auction you want, be it Heritage, Ebay or other. Morgan's dominate all other coinage with the exception of Lincoln cents. Large supply with limited demand not a good combination. I just don't see today's youth having the interest our generations do. They'd rather buy fancy basketball shoes and technology. But what do I know. As far as LDRC's comments. He's spot on. Heck, even ebay has warnings all over about going outside their site for deals. They don't want you to use their huge marketing empire to your gain without their cut. I can't blame them.
I GET IT! It's the past, and I won't do it again but I refuse to believe that it is one of the worst things to do. That's my opinion of course, but in the highly unprobable situation as LostDutchman said, where she could think he was trying to rip him off, and post that online, would be for sure, one of the worst things possible. That could literally ruin his business. I get that. There's nothing I can do to change the past now.
"Highly unprobable" (improbable)? How many times have you read on this very board about people claiming some dealer tried to rip them off? Even here it rarely matters if it is true or not as the person's perception is all that they need to run with it. There ARE those out there who, regardless of reality or comparing apples to oranges, will assume the worst and hurl unfounded accusations if they don't get what they want or think they deserve. With the simple fact that you offered well over what the dealer did, especially if this woman knows little about coins/metals, what to do think she likely will assume about his motives? Also, didn't you write of this before not long after joining? If so, does this mean that you're only nine now? Regardless of your age, I realize that you're young; no one is expecting you to change the past, but you would do well to show the board that you understand that, in this case, the "jerk" was not the dealer. Live and learn, my young friend...
No I am not 9, and my age is of no concern to you, and if the board doesn't understand that I get it by now, then I give up. Come on, I literally said in all caps "I get it" What more do you want?
Well, you wrote "I GET IT!" and then immediately followed that up with "but I refuse to believe that it is one of the worst things to do". These are mutually exclusive statements. If you truly "got it" you would understand what all these extremely experienced numismatists are attempting to explain to you. Rather, I believe you wrote that you understood simply to make the situation disappear.
This is what the holdup is. Sorry if it feels like we are picking on you. Everyone here knows you cannot change the past, but it still seems you do not understand WHY what you did was wrong. If you posted, "ok, I do see why what I did was wrong" and left it at that it would be dropped, but you post "I refuse to believe...." meaning you are not learning, just giving up the argument. That is the point, we are simply trying to educate you and others WHY it is such a bad thing to do to the coin store owner, not berate you about the past. Everyone has done things they wish they could hange in their past, that is life and nothing can change that. All we can do is learn and try to do better in the future.
You're right.. your age is of no concern to me, nor are you; my apologies for simply trying to get you to understand and show a little maturity to the board. Oh, and it does not matter that you "literally said in all caps 'I get it'". If it had sunk in, there would be no reason to have grown increasingly defensive while attempting to justify your position that this was acceptable behavior; some things never change. And to think that I believed your PM apologizing for childish behavior was sincere.
Well, 1. Short of a stickup, you DID do the worst thing possible in a coin shop 2. You have made a considerable number of those posts yourself, arguing it was not so bad I know most of the posters on this thread for quite a while. They are good people as the saying goes. I truly believe not one of them are trying to upset you, or berate you. They are trying to EDUCATE you and others who may read this thread on the subject. True, a couple are coin store owners so I understand their opinions might be a little more vehement than others, but I am a collector just like you. I have no shop I have to pay for, I only have a few decades of experience in this hobby I try to pass on to others here.
Got it. Anyways to the OP sorry for derailing your thread and posting 2 pages of off-topic subject, but it was done for the better good. Peace
I know the OP is new, but he might as well understand some threads "go off the rail" here, lol. Anyway, we are all friends here and hope no ill will was garnered, since none was intended.
Better good of what? Part of learning is posting positive, constructive posts here, and not wasting people's time when they try to tell you something. I hope that you learned that much, at least. First of all, the nature of the topic was inflammatory--"The skinny on investing in Morgans." We're not "investors" per se--we are collectors, and the overall approach to coin buying, selling and interacting with people in the coin world implies some discretion, decency, and compassion. 99% of us here are NOT in it for the money and would not post something of that nature in the first place. After being told repeatedly that there was a violation in etiquette, you continued to argue. Thus, I question the genuineness and sincerity of your motives in the first place--are you here to learn, or to troll?? Be honest with yourself.
The better good of knowing what's truly wrong. You do realize before this topic was made I had no idea I did something wrong there, and how bad it could be. And your suspicion of me being a "troll" is false. I only came here to learn. Sorry to anyone who was offended by my previously arrogant and/or ignorant posts.
