A coin I got as a gift for my birthday. Never heard of the king, found a good read of him on Wiki. So I learned about a new king. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthias_Corvinus Matthias "Corvinus" (Mátyás Hunyadi in Hun.) (1458 - 1490) AR Hugary Denar O:+ M • MATHIE • R • VNGARIE •, Four-part shield with Hungarian arms (Árpádian stripes, patriarchal cross, Dalmatian leopard heads, Bohemian lion), raven with ring in escutcheon, annulets to sides. R: PATRON — VNGARIE, Nimbate crowned Madonna with nimbate infant Jesus to her right, K—P/rosette (privy mark) in fields. 16mm .4g Huszar 698
Sweet => that's a very cool silver addition (it's in great shape with nice centering and all of the legend-info) ... congrats!! Curious => were you hinting for a coin like this baby?
Very cool, I also have a denar! It is my oldest coin with a readable date on it, 1545! Pretty similar design, huh?
This is as close as I get to having a Hungarian Denar ... Hungry-man Dinner (Hungarian Denar) ... very weak, I admit (sorry) Actually, this is the only example I have from the OP coin's century: Lorraine, City of Metz (AR Gros) St Etienne Kneeling & Family Shield 1415-1540 AD
Matt's coin shows a lot of shadowing from the reverse on the obverse. I'm not sure if it is clashed dies or just weakness from the very thin flan. The KB in field is the mintmark of Kremnica (Körmöcz-Bánya in Hungarian). I believe Matt's KP reading is a result of the obverse messiness. These are about as cheap an early dated coin as we see. That is why I bought my Ferdinand 1536 (probably the easiest ruler to find well struck?). You see a lot more Ferd's for every Matt offered. They are common coins but it would be hard to put together a year set all with Jesus' face clear.
I had the info wrong, its 1488 and of course the actual mint name, as doug mentioned. Updated in my gallery, and the reference. Its a P, not B Doug I too have a Ferd. Denar, which was my first. Was $12 a couple of years ago.
Ferdinand was Habsburg and that time the coin emission was different , they used only the name of the Mint-state like K-B :Körmöczbánya, or N-B,. Nagybánya, etc. Later are only remain the K-B.. or more later only B, Buda or Budapest B-P,
I think I actually have one of these as well but from Ferdinand. I have never gotten around to actually attributing unfortunately. It was one of those coins I bought on a whim and it has been neglected in my 'to be attributed' pile. I find this period really interesting mainly because I think the Habsburg family was really cool. Plus the coins are just so thin and neat. We always talk about the artistry on those tiny little Greek coins but the fact that they were able to actually able to produce these coins on something basically paper thin is quite the feat in itself to me.
nice B day present mat! here's mine , of the "ferd" variety... man, I'm glad cointalk saves a draft of you post while your working on it...I could have swore I posted this Monday. must have done everything but hit the post button, everything above this line was sitting in draft.
