I am a new collector (<4 months). I uncovered this coin while metal detecting an old New Orleans park. It was about 6-8 inches deep and gave a really blaring signal in the silver range on my detector.

Unfortunately, coins in South Louisiana soil don't age well at all. I can tell it has some writing on it and a westward facing bust. It is roughly the size of a Kennedy half dollar but I am fairly certain the bust on the coin is not Kennedy.

    Any ideas?

I'm not sure. Maybe a British penny?

Really hard to tell from your pictures. The only half-dollar with the head facing that way is the Kennedy and it's not that. The only other regular coins from the US that are around that size are large cents, and it's not one of those either. Could be a commemorative half? If not, then it's something foreign. If you could get some of the wording off the coin, that might help narrow it down.
