There are many coins that trade infrequently due to rarity or condition rarity. The redbook price is often low on them. It also don't take into account many coins can have exceptional color strike or eye appeal these can bring far more then any book value. As well as details coins will bring far less then book value. That being said I use my redbook daily but not for pricing for mintage figures coin weights and specs and general knowledge it's the best!!
Not hardly an au-50 in ha archives runs between 30-45k they've sold at least half a dozen in the last few years a ms-65 sold for $250k tho
the au50 i forgot what condition it was but it was worn in the rear and perfect obverse.. thats why that one sold for that much.
On a coin this early was not likely worn in the reverse probably a weak strike there was a lot of quality control issues in the us mint in the early years Remember everything was done by hand!!
Yes, it's S-9, the most available of Wreath cents. More importantly, it's vital to understand HOW to determine it's identity. It's fascinating how different people are, and the diversity of approaches which all arrive at the proper conclusion. For me, my mental flowchart is very different from Conder's. After ruling out the easy S-5 (large letters and date obverse), I look at these keys first : OBVERSE : the laurel sprig under the bust quickly narrows down the obverse die REVERSE : the trefoils (number and location) and nature of the bow help me pin down the reverse die. In this case, this obverse is the "Sprig with a Twig"... the three leaves have a little left-pointing branch. That, coupled with the "kidney bean" bow, immediately gives S-9. That's my thinking in the hustle and bustle of the convention floor; quickie "field attribution" can be quite useful. When I get home, I look closer and do all the other detailed attribution to be certain. I hope everyone enjoyed all this mojo. Thanks for playing !
I'd guess that's F12. What grade did it come back as? There's lots of surface wear, but the surfaces are better than a similar S-9 I got slabbed "VF Details with Environmental Damage". That one brought $4406.25 (including buyer's premium, which I didn't get any of) at auction with Heritage in April: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1204&lotNo=3899
