Next up is a 1964P ANACS slab. Nothing is attributed on the label so I guess either there is nothing special about it or the extra fee for attribution was not paid..I can see that it has doubling on the pictures etc , but now I wonder if it is even special at all . The Treasure Hunting Kennedy Halves Book does not even have any 64P's listed which I find strange. The Kennedy Half Dollar Book however does but I can not even begin to see which on it belongs under. Again the "Y" has doubling for sure, the stars also, as does "In God We Trust". I am also looking at this site but I am a bit overwhelmed... http://varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1964.htm#_1964 So how do I tell what I have, I have tried but I have no confidence in what I think is right. It has a flared G and normal hair...so the reverse also has some doubling. - It could be page 93 1964 1-R-II-C ..... with a URS of 4, therefore unlikely - It could be page 83 1964 16-O-II-C (3) ...with a URS of 2, therefore even more unlikely - It could be page 84 1964 17-O-II-C (3) ...with a URS of 2, therefore even more unlikely - It could be page 85 1964 18-O-II-C (3) ...with a URS of 3, therefore unlikely - It could be page 83 1964 16-O-II-C (3) ...with a URS of 2, therefore even more unlikely - It could be page 67 1964 RDV-002,MDR-002,MD-2-R-II-C (3)......with a URS of 29, this seems the most likely one.. The Kennedy Half Dollar Book has mostly proofs so I will really be in trouble when those come in so I thought I would be better off learning the process with these two before I tackle those. Any help you can give me I would be grateful for.. Thanks Ethan
If you see doubling on that coin you're seeing something I sure don't see. I see zip, nada, nothing, that even remotely resembles doubling - anywhere !
Look at the attached 'Y' picture, and the '4', its there but small. I wish I could take such good pictures.
You'll never convince some folks Ethan since if it's not of the caliber of a 55/55, 72/72, or 95/95, they'll just never see the doubling on your coin. It's definitely doubled. Now, the Half Dollar coins and dies presented their own problems to the mint in that, due to their size, they always required multiple hubbings to get any kind of acceptable relief. The net result is that there are many, many doubled dies within the Kennedy Series. CONECA's Variety Vista ( http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety Master Listings/kennedy doubled dies 1964.htm ) has 38 different DDO's for 1964 and 25 different DDR's. Some are light spread and some are heavy spread. There are also Master Die doublings which include a Light spread on WE TRUST, 64 of date, TY of LIBERTY, and hair under R of LIBERTY It is possible that you've found one of these MDO coins. The best advice I could give on the matter would be to submit the coin to CONECA for variety attribution. They'll send you a report on the coin which includes the cert number for future reference. However, you'll have to be prepared to also receive a "Yes its a doubled die but it's too minor to List" report. SInce oyu obviously are into looking for these, might I recommend that you join CONECA for discounts on submission privileges? http://conecaonline.org/join.html
Thanks, I thought so. I am trying to learn how to attribute it and that is why I started the thread as many here could help me get started. Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have looked through my two books and I just can not seem to nail it. I mean there are die markers for 82 NoFG's that make it easy, these 64's are a bear. I might just do that at some point. Right now I would not even know where to begin and I just joined the ANA. Thanks for your help 19lyds.
