Yesterday while paying for a spot at a parking ramp I received $16 in dollar coins as change. As I glanced through them I was surprised to see William McKinley staring back at me. 2013D. It hadn't been circulated long, but it had the usual scuffs and marks that all the others had. I'm assuming somebody ordered a roll or a bag of these from the mint and ended up depositing some of them at a later time. I was just wondering if anyone else has found similar varieties in circulation that were not issued for circulation. Presidential, Kennedy, or otherwise. Feel free to share them with the rest of us!
I've found several NIFC Kennedy halves in circulation but am surprised at how many NIFC dollar coins I have come across. I have ~30 NIFC Sac's and Prez dollars right now.
I have found several of the Denver and Philadelphia mint tokens that they put in mint sets years ago - struck on cent blanks they get cut out of the mint sets and spent.
I know I get rolls of president dollars, state park quarters, Kennedy halves, etc. from the Mint, keep what I want for my collection, sell a few to friends and family, and then just spend the rest as if they were just plain money (well, which they are lol... whether they were intended to actually circulate or not). Based on the OP's find, clearly I'm not the only person to do this. As for the other side, twice in change I received Kennedy half dollar proofs; once a 1971S and another time a 1989S. I didn't even realize they were proofs until later, they lost their mirror finish and had a tad bit of wear on them but still looked quite sharp, though they had a lot of fingerprints in the field as you'd expect from circulated proofs. (I almost was tempted to have them graded lol but later decided it wasn't worth it, and wouldn't have been even if they weren't "impaired" proofs. But I still kept them in my collection just because they were pretty cool finds.)
Could be ones I've spent lol... I used to be able to get them from the Denver Mint gift shop, from dispensers that sold them at face value. Later they removed them though and now the only way to get them is to buy rolls directly from the Mint. I don't want 25 of them though... I keep a few for my collection, sell a few to family and friends, and the rest I just spend; I figure that offsets some of the premium over face value I had to pay. I also love the reaction various merchants have to them when I spend them... maybe some of them will get interested in coin collecting because of it lol... (I especially love how cashiers react to me spending half dollars; a lot of them had never seen one before!)
Recently went through a box of halves from the bank ($500 worth) and found 2005D, 2006D, 2008D, 2009P and 2010D NIFC's in the box. Also 1992s and 2001s proofs in fairly good shape. Yes, the NIFC's do circulate.
I get NIFC halves all the time. I keep them (except for ringers), I also get proofs...so it happens..
yeah they used to have a machine that sold current year Quarters, Halves or Dollars at the FRB of Kansas City. i got $10 worth of 2012 Kennedy Halves, Kept one and spent the rest. last year they removed it
That would explain some of the reason behind why I find late date Kennedies in roll searches. I have enough of them I may dump most of them back into circulation.
I have quite a few but will hang on to them for now. Not sure what they will be worth in years to come but at least they will be worth 50 cents, maybe it can be quick access bail money. * years ago my dad had to bail me out for little underage beer issue, nothing was open and there were no ATM's. He used my rolled 40% halves. I went ballistic and REFUSED to leave and wanted to stay until morning. The Sheriff had to promise me to give them back for cash, to which I accepted and all was well. Small town - LONG time ago.
I have dumped State Quarter rolls and Westward Journey Nickel rolls into circulation when I had a hard time selling them.
Yeah Long time ago, I liked beer and girls and it would seem that even though I was old enough to vote, old enough to serve my nation, I was not old enough to drink a darn beer.
At least in my teens in Virginia I could drink beer at 18. I don't care for wine, but could drink it also. Hard liquor had to wait until 21. I believe the federal government legislated out under 21 drinking ages through withholding highway funds if the states didn't raise the limit.
