Any recommended shops in Charlotte I should visit while I'm here? I will have an hour or two on Monday to kill.
I've bought a couple of coins off Steve Weber who lives in the area I think. He should be able to steer you right. Go to the bottom of this listing for his contact information. He's got some nice gold and Morgan stuff.....this is just the first one I clicked on for his info. My brother lives in Charlotte but he's not a coin guy. He could point you towards good golf though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1880-9-S-PCGS-MS64-VAM-11-Hot-50-0-9-Overdate-29410652-/371054753326
I live in charlotte and for the size of the city, its slim pickings. Hyatt coin shop will have the most coins, but rarely have I ever walked out of the store feeling like I got a deal in any. Don't waste your time with Providence coin shop, no real rarities there, mostly common coins in common condition. Piedmont rare coins used to be my favorite until it closed last year....bummer. He still has a website, but as for fair deals and a great variety of stuff, I sure do miss his shop.
Dang. I was hoping for Piedmont to be open. The website was promising. Plus I seen a couple in his inventory I like. I have always found the shops here to be lacking. Thought I was missing something, guess I wasn't. This is the second or third time I've tried to find a good shop here.
Hyatt. Its a gun shop and coin shop. I was on business in Charlotte 2months ago and bought $100 face in halves to kill time before my departure flight. The owner let me go in the back and go through a bucket, a bucket no joke for 2hrs. I will sing praises of them until then end of time.
I've checked Hyatt out but I don't know that they really carry what I'm looking for. Looking for MS Type Coins, AU-MS seated quarters, and album fillers as a last resort if I can't find material for my graded collection.
????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????? You must normally shop at the Smithsonian then champ.
No, most of my coins fall in the sub $1000 range. Most are between $200-$500. You just gotta look for good coins.
You have checked them out...but you don't know that they have what you want. So, my question is, when you were "checking them out", did you suffer amnesia. I dont understand. If you check something out, wouldn't that define knowing what they had and if that applies to your needs?
No, most of my coins fall in the sub $1000 range. Most are between $200-$500. You just gotta look for good coins.
Yeah I have no clue what youre talking about. I made an offer on a $25k coin while I was there. And I walked out with some cherrypicked common halves. That would pretty much encompass 99% of all collectors needs.
By check them out, I mean that I have located them, know about them, and have perused their online inventory. That doesn't tell me the atmosphere, or if they carry coins I want to purchase. Which is why I brought common albums as well as my graded list to find some things to buy. I wanted to check out Piedmont, but they are closed down. Independence isn't open on Monday when I have time available. Hyatt is the only other option that I located via google so I asked the forum in case I was overlooking a good dealer. I don't understand what the point of you bringing up the Smithsonian was.
I guess I was under the impression that Hyatt was on the 'ghetto' side of town and not a nice shop. I don't know much about the coin shops in the area so hence why I opened the thread to begin with. If you're telling me Hyatt has good coins and large variety, then I will check them out.
I have seen Hyatt at shows before, and they show some AMAZING coins. I think I recall them saying that they only brought extremely high end coins to shows. If you are willing to take a drive out to Mooresville, there is a shop across from their Walmart. They are called Race City Coins and Collectibles. While they don't have any 10k coins, I recall them having a nice selection.
See that's the point of this thread. I was under a different impression from the non collectors that I am visiting. Sounds like Hyatt is a shop for me to check out. I'm not trying to buy $10K coins, but I am trying to spend between $500-$1000 on a few coins.
Well thank you for your time and recommendation. I will report back on Monday with what I purchased and how my experience went.
So I went by Hyatt today and I must say I rather enjoyed myself. It's a huge gun/coin shop with a very nice coin display setup in a showroom immediately when you walk in. I spent about 2 hours there today and was helped by one of the family members named Mitch Hyatt. Very nice fella a few years older than myself and he was quite helpful with trying to fill all of my requests and with answering any questions I had. I brought along plenty of material and albums to ensure that I would walk away with a few decent purchase and I was pleasantly surprised to realize I walked out with a coin from almost every category I was searching. I didn't hesitate to let Mitch know exactly what I wanted to see when I arrived. I gave the store a cursory glance to get my bearings and set in asking for some graded seated quarters. Turns out they had about 10-15 for me to look through (sorry no pics guys ), While I was going through those I inquired about some other graded coins like large cents and bust halves, but that really wasn't their forte and so I settled in on the quarters Most of what I seen were proofs and several of those were simply outstanding. In fact I asked to have one priced and it came in at about about 5X over my budget for the day. I did see a beautiful 1891 with some gorgeous toning but it was at the high end of my budget and didn't really quite have that 'wow' factor for me to spend all my money on one coin for the day. I finally zeroed in on another 1854, it was graded a little lower than what I'm trying to collect, and it is also a duplicate, but she was quite nice and for the price I thought it was a fair purchase. I'll upload a picture later. I was also pleased to find some UNC Mexican pesos from the 20s that fit well with my set and I was able to add two new coins to that set for about $40. That was a very nice bonus. I picked up a handful of common date, well circulated (but with full dates) buffalo nickels to work on an album as a small side project. I was able to add I believe 3 new UNC Franklins to another set of those I am building. The last items I was able to pick up were some used albums. One was a near perfect buffalo nickel album to upgrade an album I was using that was missing slides. Old one was a Whitman album, new one is a Dansco. Also acquired an old Whitman pair of albums for a type set. Pretty cool as they look brand new but the dates stop at 1960. All in all it was a good day and very successful. I most certainly felt like I got some great deals today and will surely go back when i visit charlotte again. My fiancé is from there, so hopefully this will be a regular destination for me. Oh, and I almost forgot I ended up spending time (and money) in the gun shop. Turns out they had the holster I was needing for my Ruger 9mm. Last one on their shelf too. No sir I got no complaints on Hyatt today. Just an all around great experience and great shop. Thank you to the folks who recommended them, the visit was WELL worth my time.
Yeah he is. I pestered him to death today and we both parted ways with smiles on our faces, so in my eyes he's a champ. I know I was a small pain in the neck, I mean I made the poor fella hand me the 5 gallon bucket of buffalo nickels to go thru while he was searching for the slabbed stuff I asked about. That thing was like 3/4s of the way full of nickels, so it wasn't exactly light either. But yes, all jokes aside, he was very accommodating and made sure I was taken care of with any question I had. Like I said, he searched inventory for me, actually STOCKED many of the items I have an interest in, was very easy to work with on the final price, and even extended a small bonus I was unaware of and was already happy with the sticker price to begin with. That's a top notch experience in my book. Especially the last part. I already felt like I had a great deal and was happy paying the full price we agreed upon. I wasn't expecting to receive the deal I did on the albums, they were used, but the sticker price was more than fair. He saved me at least another $10 on the deal he cut me for the albums, and believe it or not, that small action left the biggest impression upon me. You see, I didn't know about the deal they have if you buy a few albums and a few coins together, so he could have charged me full sticker price and I would've been none the wiser, instead he extended an additional little deal to me and saved me those few dollars. He didn't have to do that, but just a small honest gesture like that speaks volumes to me and makes me want to do business with that place in the future. Thanks again for convincing me to go.
