I think this is a 65 FS, albiet 5 full steps with the last one soft. But I think I see more marks than absolutely necessary for a 66. Am I off base on this one?
Grading is subjective. That is plain to see from the votes in the poll which are all over the place. There is absolutely no consensus when it comes to this coin.
I wonder if there would be a little more consistency on this coin if it were viewed in hand verses photos. Although, your photography skills are quite good as I can personally say since I owned a coin you once did and have a photo of it you took.
I certainly think there would be more consensus about the full steps if viewed in hand. I would expect most people who saw this coin in hand to declare it full steps. Supersize photos have a tendency to trick us with regards to step detail. Regarding the numerical grade of the coin, I am not sure that an in hand evaluation would change much. This grade of this coin is really dependent upon the grading priorities of the grader. Those who are strike conscious and focus on surface preservation are more likely to grade the coin MS65. Graders who focus more on eye appeal and luster are more apt to see this as an MS67. One other thing about my photography. It is good and I take pride in that, but the close up photos that I typically provide give the coin a very different look than the first impression you get when you view a coin from over 12 inches away. This photo might better represent how it looks with the naked eye, not under a loupe. If I had shown this photo as opposed to the photos in the OP, would anyone have graded the coin differently? The tiny imperfections seem to disappear in this photo.
OFF-TOPIC! By the way, for those of you who always seem to have a hard time taking photos through plastic, please note that Paul has taken this shot from directly overhead with two light sources at roughly 10 & 2 o'clock. I don't think I would have changed my grade. I don't see a + or a *. So, what did NGC grade it? Chris
I still agree with my original grade of MS66 5FS. Paul, when you submitted this, did you submit for "reconsideration" or did you crack it to get it in the new pronged holder? That old holder (as you know -- but others may not know) was from an era that only recognized 6FS as "FS" at NGC. I don't have any problem with this coin in a 5FS holder -- and it looks 66 all day long to me.
I must agree with NGC. The bottom step is clearly missing on the right hand side. Enough bag marks to be 65 over 66 and certainly not 67.
Why? I voted MS65 before going to the second page of the discussion and seeing the results, so I was pleased with my diagnosis.
I was laughing because the thread was a setup. The coin was originally graded MS65 when first submitted in the 90's. I cracked the coin out of the MS65 slab last year and resubmitted it because I knew it was undergraded and qualified for 5FS. As I stated earlier in the thread, I was expecting MS66+* 5FS. Well they didn't give me the star designation but I did get a nice surprise. Congratulations to all the guys who said MS67 5FS, you were also correct. Now, lets continue this thread by having a lively debate about one of my favorite subjects in numismatics: GRADEFLATION!
I'm honestly a little surprised about the FS based on the photos...but I will admit I'm not that good when it comes to the FS designation. Paul, when looking at this coin in hand...what do you think each aspect of the coin grades (surface, luster, eye appeal, ect)?
