Yep, I agree, the edges have the same grainy appearance as a couple of fake key date Peace Dollars I bought a few months back..... One isn't supposed to ask a ladies weight, but put the old gal on a scale and let's find out
I am definitely unfamiliar with the Trade Dollar design in terms of seeing doubling on it, but I am having a tough time seeing any clear notches. It looks like a lot of the design was flattened or cut away...(check out above the wings for instance, very flat-like). I am not sure what it really is, but I have my doubts about it being a DDR...
I should have looked at it closer , but the doubling is wrong for the 801 and 802 '77-S Doubled Dies . I'll say fake .
This coin was a Baltimore Expo purchase, from a dealer I have seen there before, though I do not remember the business name. It cost me $145. I saw the reverse doubling and thought I had either an extreme example of the DDR, FS-802, or possibly a double struck reverse. I showed it to Rich Uhrich, an established dealer, and he told me he thought it was both double struck and doubled die. "Nice coin," were his words. So I took it over to the PCGS table and submitted it. Here's the result:
I have a lot of receipts from the show that say "Purchased lot of 8 coins", etc. I have no idea which one is the right receipt. Plus I don't have the original holder, so that makes this the first counterfeit that I'm just SOL on. I thought I would photograph it, document it, show it here on CT, and throw it in the garbage. $177 lesson learned.
The receded edge is much better than most counterfeits. Was that bubble near 12:00 on the obverse raised or depressed in any way?
I wouldn't mind having it as a fake , we can learn a lot how the Chinese make their fakes . Is there a way to weigh it ?
Sorry for the loss C-B-D, I hate it when stuff like this happens. That's a mighty fine looking fake, it seriously is identical to my bogus Peace Dollars.....they don't even have the dubious doubling. If it weren't for a weight discrepancy I'd have never known, which is pretty Spooky... Will have to make a poll on them one of these days :-0 The Chinese con-artists are getting better everyday, all we can do is roll with the punches and trust no one.
