i just noticed that both the presidential AND native american dollar series are set to end in 2016. any thoughts on what they will do with the dollar in 2017? switch back to the 2000-2008 sacagewea? or maybe a new design?
Hopefully a new design that would be based off of barber's engravings or something like that. Our coins lack creativity
i think it would be cool to use some old silver dollar designs like morgan, peace, trade, etc. on golden dollars.
Well, if the Federal Reserve Bank has their way, the coins will simply be dropped. If Congress comes to their senses and take budgeting on a National Level seriously, the design will change to something else as I doubt that they would go back to the Original Sacagawea design.
i wonder when they will finally phase out the $1 bill. it would have made a lot more sense if they would have done it a) in the 1970's when the $2 bill was brought back b) in 2000 when the sacagewea came out or c) in 2007-early 2008 when the presidential dollars actually circulated (at least around here) at least the $2 bill is becoming a little more popular. there's a bank near me that uses them in the place of 2 ones and i've seen a lot more people spending them
They should stop the dollar program until the run out of dollars in inventory. That should take us until mid century.
i think they have about 900,000,000 in stock (counting SBA and ikes). the US prints about 2,000,000,000 $1 notes a year. if we eliminated the $1 bill, i estimate the current supply of $1 coins could last about 6 months. but, the $1 coins could last about 30 years in circulation, so they wouldnt have to make as many after the first couple of years
If I recall, the current law says that the Sacagawea/Native American dollars will still be minted after the presidential series ends (which will end with Reagan's coin as the third Presidential Dollar of 2016).

Yeah, that's what wiki says, but I can't find any mention of 2016 as the last year in the 2007 law itself. I've read that Sac's were to continue, by law, after the prez series ended, but I haven't found the proper reference. Thanks.
My guess is the dollar coin will be dropped. It has failed to be adopted by the majority of the population and has as a result been a waste of money. The only way it will become accepted is if they drop the dollar note and they don't seem willing to do that. Even though the note is a bigger waste...dropping one will save money.
If im not mistaken Reagan wont be minted since carter is all Alive. Only 2 coins are set for 2016 I think...
Yeah it's hard to find definitive interpretations of these laws but from all I have read over the years, Reagan will be last one (now that 2014 has started) and they'll skip Carter. I've seen it explained both ways...and I honestly don't know what they are going to do. I do know that a President is legally required to have died 2 years prior to the release of his coin...but part of me wonders too if that would be changed if Carter was to pass away closer to his "expected release date."
i think they should make a dollar-sized token for carter and include it in mint and proof sets, and sell them individually for $1 each
