Bank kept my foreign coin...

    I agree with Rick! You're abusing a privilege, and if more people do this, the banks will probably start charging ALL OF US just to make a deposit and/or withdrawal.

    If I was a bank employee and they were going to throw away the coins, I would ask for them. Over time, you might have something of value.

    Then all coin roll hunters are abusing the system? Coin deposits are an explicit agreement, not a privilege, for being an account holder. Ordering coins are assumed within that agreement. Banks order coins all the time for businesses, as well as private individuals, all the time without giving it a second thought (more so for the former) . If I open a business account, then it's business as usual since it's more of a conventional norm and it's ok?

    I did check my coins. Only one passed by. I don't blame the bank for the foreign coin, as before I thought the teller was sticking it to me and purposefully not giving me the coin. But, that is not the case as was pointed out earlier.

    You have to remember, they have a job to do and what you are doing does create more work for them...plus it's their job to make sales and if they are spending a lot of time doing this it can be frustrating. It is their job to take care of customers...but anyone who has worked with the public knows there are a couple customers that are just a pain. You don't want to be that guy.

    I think there are a couple ways to help this situation. First, be very friendly to the tellers. It's hard to be rude to someone who's friendly. Secondly, don't use the same branch for getting coins and returning coins. Buy coins at one and return to another. That way the tellers don't start to feel like you are creating a ton more work for them.

    I don't think he is abusing anything. Plenty of people do this...and a lot of them come though here and I rarely see anyone calling it abuse. I think there are ways he could do it a little more politely, but it's not abuse.

    Yeah, I learned a lot here. It's really about the approach with the teller and not burdening one bank/branch (although I go to different banks for these already, I think they see the withdrawals and deposits at different branches on their screens). More poise and friendliness, and less outward frustration would probably help a lot. I was more stoic and then a bit frustrated.

    It would be prudent to call ahead of time for a wheelbarrow full, but I don't see why not. ;)

    Though, I wouldn't want any teller to go through that experience...

    Call your bank and ask if they will accept a wheelbarrow full of LOOSE change. I'd be interested to know their response.

    Ummmm........never mind! They might cancel your account on the spot.

    At least that guy rolled everything to pay his taxes.

    Rolls are opened up by my bank to be counted by the machine. They actually prefer loose change.

    They do see the withdrawals and deposits...but that's not what concerns them. They feel like they are doing work for nothing. You come in, get bulk rolled coin...then bring it back unrolled for them to deposit and get more rolled. From their perspective, there is no benefit to anyone...just more work.

    I can promise you, they won't look at the withdrawal/deposit history.

    Like you said, it's all about approach. Learn what it is that burdens them and do what you can to minimize it. Also, be upfront with them. I know when people are open and honest with me I'm much more willing to be helpful. If you want to do this for a long time and not irritate every teller in town, you need to build a professional relationship with them.

    That's how the bank I worked at was. We had to open every home rolled roll and dump it into the machine.

    I guess my BoA branch had complete faith in me. They never even bothered to take the rolls out of the box.

    Which is precisely why banks don't let "ordinary" customers come in and buy coins gratis like they used to. I have several banks that I have an accounts with, they will sell rolled coin but they charge 5% - but somehow I manage to continue walking out without paying the 5% fee - why? Because the tellers like me. I bring them goodies, I have given them hockey, baseball and play tickets, they really like candy. I don't then dump the coins at the same place - that creates bad JuJu - don't do it unless you want to make people not like you. Now I have dump banks, but then they get the same goodies the others do, and lately a couple of tellers that are collectors themselves so I bring them and sell them goodies for face value that they like. I also do favours like authentication of older bills, buying up the $2s they don't like or want and spending them around town etc.

    I treat CRH like a business where you have to go on your personality to open cash drawers, vaults etc. It is possible. A persistent and friendly attitude goes a long way.

    Did I mention that tellers have me on speed dial? So much so that I am becoming a victim of my own success - buying up more stuff than I can deal with sometimes.

    I check all mine with a magnet to pull out the Canadians I don't want - also look for benders etc that jam up machines. Nothing more ridiculous than fouling up the coin machine because of some coin you put in it that was bent up.

    Every time I visit my bank, I bring a box of cookies or pastries. I always smile and chat, ask them about their day and such. My tellers bend over backward to accommodate me.

    I think it depends on the bank company. I worked for US Bank and they had us unroll every roll we got in. On the other hand, I do some of my banking at BoA and I have never seen them do that.

    I use Chase - they have a 'trust but verify' policy. Candies and cookies sound like a good idea; small talk at the very least.

    Get to know them. greet them by name. Treat them well, not as your personal servants. That'll take you a long way.

    i always just ask for the machine rejects. the first time i did this, (in addition to some pre-euro junk and paper clips), i got 2 ikes. i tried to pay for them with a $2 bill, and the teller said "just take 'em. if you dont, the policy is that we have to throw them in the trash". i still can't believe that they throw perfectly good money in the trash.
    anyway, just ask if you can have it next time. at least at my bank, if you dont take it they are required to throw them away. (and plus, you might get some ikes. i've accumulated a total of 24 just from asking :D)
