I believe that you DID call a dealer out by name. You're obviously a nightmare to deal with. A couple weeks ago you bragged In a post about how proud you were of your terrible practices on Buying from people on EBay. Please share you eBay name with us so that we can all block you.
Reread the post dude. Amanda's coin had a markup for toning. All coins have a markup for good toning. Hell 90% of my purchases are toned. If it had a normal brown it would not necessarily have been a good purchase. However the front is totally even yellow, with a purple back. That made it a good buy at the price. Why would I buy a coin at a show for all cash, post in other threads how happy I was with the toning and the purchase. Thank Amanda and then rip on her??? Dude I was not speaking to ANY dealers here on this thread only collectors. And as far as my ebay goes I have returned only three items ever with 2 accounts with over 400 purchases. Two were graded pcgs counterfeit. The third was a 1860 1c claimed to be Unc but came back pcgs au details cleaned. I actually pay usually within 5 minutes of winning. Dude your attacks are unnecessary. You are not providing value in your posts and quite honestly they seem like they are coming from an unbalanced individual. Why don't you just post your ebay name so I know who not to give my money. As with the other poster on this thread I'm done responding to you. Seems like this thread is touching some nerves. Wasn't intended to do that but I find these reactions interesting
Negativity? What a joke! You expect everyone to respond positively to your negative attitude about dealers at shows, but you don't want to accept our negativity toward your attitude. It doesn't matter. You don't need to respond. Chris
No offense Doug, but I think $200 was probably too much back in 1835. As for my experience at coin shows here in North and South Carolina, I have not found any "Great" buys. I have paid a "Fair" price for a couple of coins, but most shows I don't buy anything unless it is a toner that I really like and those are always at a premium now. CBD - I would liken your pickup/profit more to knowledge in a certain variety/series, kinda like a "cherry pick", rather than a good deal. Granted, it was a GREAT deal for you, though. Nice score.
I paid 3593 for this one. Not at a show on eBay. I was offered 3500 at the Vegas show by a respected dealer. With my ebucks 2% back I paid only $22 over the dealer offer. I am comfortable being in a coin at this level. Btw the camera really does not do justice to the coin. The purple really pops in hand. That I can buy a coin like this from eBay with great buyer protection and be so close to "dealer wholesale" to me shows how great eBay can be for the buyer.
You have some beautiful coins Vic! I wish I could show some good deals of coins that were purchased from coin shows, but I have only been to one and didn't buy much there. I'm sorry for everyone's negative comments, I myself don't really see anything that people should get worked up about in the original post. -Savy
These things happen in life. I'm not made of glass. You have an annoyed dealer whose feelings are hurt accusing me of ignoring Doug's coins when I clearly state that I have no knowledge base on world coins AND that I'm sure he had to get a good deal to post them. Then you have another guy who thinks I was calling amanda out when she liked my post and said it was nice to hear from me. He thinks I'm a bad eBay customer because I returned counterfeit coins. None of the above is my fault or problem. Besides this level of negativity pales to my actual job where I'm dealing with people freaking out every day. People jumping to conclusions with no knowledge of the actual information is all I do every day. No big deal. I never buy white "normal" coins I always would prefer to wait until the toned gem rolls by. So I wait and only buy one here and there. But if I can buy the coins on eBay and sell at shows to dealers then it shows you how good eBay can be. Obviously some people have found good deals at some shows. But this thread was not smeared with page after page of great show purchases. Maybe they are out there and some people are uncomfortably posting or they don't even care and are not posting for that reason. But if a dealer has to fly somewhere and pay out of pocket for room and board I don't see how they would be interested or even able to give good deals. Again not calling any particular dealer out. I did retake the pictures of Amanda's sale to me and can show you the color. The pictures may look like I had to "juice" them but the coin is really pure yellow on front and majority purple on back.
That's an amazing coin! I have always wanted a pattern coin, but I'd want to get one with a completely new design, like the Judd-943 coin. It'll take a while before I can afford that one though as I'm too young to legally work anywhere I too like toned coins, but whenever I see them, they sell for a significant mark up. And I probably couldn't sell them for a profit to dealers because they always try to rip me off. They see a young teen, and think I know nothing, so they offer less than half of what the coin is actually worth. I had an MS64 Seated Liberty Dime graded by NGC, and a dealer explained to me that it is graded way too high, and said it was actually an AU55 coin! That same dealer tried to offer under melt for my BU Morgans. For now, I'm going to stick to selling on eBay. I'm currently waiting for a nice Proof Cameo Barber Half to pop up on Heritage. I want to get one for $1,800 or less, so it will take a few months before I find one with really nice eye appeal that sells for under $1,800. And I'm currently collecting coins in rattler holders and old green holders, so every time I have enough to buy a Proof Cameo Barber Half, I spend it on OGHs!
I don't know the backstory of this thread and have only been to 1 major show, but it seems like an interesting topic. I think it's pretty obvious to say that most of the coins that dealers would want to bring into a show format are PQ examples that represent their business well and have a better likelihood of selling based on eye-appeal, these will carry a stronger price and rightfully so. It's a great idea for folks to visit shows to talk coins and clearly see what nice coins should look like. Bargains are harder to find by the nature of the fact that you are dealing with professionals, but the quality of merchandise is outstanding and deals can be had. Based on my experience at the Long Beach Expo, I familiarized myself with one dealer and kept going back, I liked their inventory and now visit their website for bargains. EBay is the best if you know what you're doing because let's face it, a $1,000 coin being listed at $1 starting bid with no reserve is pretty darn fun, but the competition is fierce and a person could get stuck over paying for something that might not infact look good in-hand. I reckon the truth of the matter is that knowledge is power, the more you know the better off you'll be. The sheer quantity of coins on the interweb give you better odds of making a score though.
The bottom line is this, anybody that really has the experience knows that as a general rule you can get better deals at coin shows. That's what Vic was questioning.
You can't get stuck. Just send it back if the coin is not as pictured. No matter what as long as you don't crack it out of the holder ebay gives you 30 days to return the coin. I've never returned any certified coins on ebay even though one picture was completely fraudulent but you always have the option of sending it back if the pictures are juiced to the point they misrepresent the coin. The individuals return policy is not enforceable. Everyone gets 30 days. This has been my experience, and on other threads you will see dealers bemoaning this issue.
I'm still not confident enough to buy most coins that interest me, but I got a 2009 NGC PF Lincoln Commemorative Dollar for $45. I was willing to spend $60, so I was happy.
This one is not cameo but is beautiful. I also got it under $1800 FYI. I did have to pay a premium over bid as the color is unbelievable
My experience has taught me that there are great deals at shows. It may not be at the first table you stop at but they are there if you have experience. Most that have been in the hobby for long will agree. Those that have not, may not agree. Time changes opinions.
Ok that sounds great but my whole point for this thread is to quantify exactly what is a good deal by having people post a u.s. Certified coin with purchase price. In the op I said that I haven't really seen any great deals at shows for the last decade. I was wondering if my idea of a great deal is different or if the deals were not great. That is why I wanted specific posts with the coin and price so I could look at the coin and judge if we have different definitions of a good deal or if I also thought it was a good deal. So if you feel this way please show me specifically what you are talking about. Btw Doug how much are those coins you posted worth I have no idea?
At the time I bought the coins Vic they were typically selling for about $300. The most I paid for any of those 3 was $180 if memory serves. And Vic, I used to make a habit of cherrypicking nice raw US coins at shows, then selling them to dealers that I knew either here on the forum or elsewhere for a substantial profit, I'm talking 300-500% profit. (who then sold them for even more [200-300% more] than they paid after they had them graded) Then I'd use the money to buy coins that I actually wanted. I just don't have pictures of them anymore to show you.
People are talking about how at shows there are many dealers competing for your money but this also holds just as true on eBay and the internet. eBay has 134,000 pcgs and ngc coins listed today. Look I've been to every show that comes to vegas, and a couple in other states here and there. My experience is that pretty much a all the coins are at retail and are not "great deals". I'm not saying there are not great deals. I'm saying I've not had that experience that others are talking about. I'm not calling out any coin dealers and saying they are ripping people off. I'm not saying people are lying about their great deals. I just want to see exactly other people are talking about in as specific and exact as can be shown so I can look and see if these good deals are really out there or if the issue is my idea of a good deal is radically different then others. And maybe people are just not interested in this thread but it is not six pages long with coin after coin posted.
