Found 1984 Double Ear Penny. Thinking of sending to NGC but suspect low grade.

Discussion in 'What's it Worth' started by Backtomyquarters, Jan 28, 2023.

  1. Found it in change a week ago & very glad but is a bit dirty. Thinking of grading (along with other coins) in hoping that Heritage or Great Collections may accept it but they are a bit fussy. Anyway I started paying cash for purchases to up my odds of finding something in change & It finally worked!

As far as the grading, I think it would sell better on the secondary market if you get it attributed.
Need a photo of the reverse to help you with a grade.

  14. Still here but have been busy. Like the people hear on coin talk & enjoy reading what others are finding & doing. I was at Shells Seafood the other night picking up food we ordered & saw a plastic cup full of pennies beside the register. I jokingly said I will buy your pennies & to my surprise she agreed & started counting. Was a little over a dollars worth so I gave her a few bucks tip that more. Nothing found but was fun anyway. I will try & post about a 1969 penny in a bit.

  15. So here is another find; About a month or so ago, I found a 1969 DDO when going through about 25 1969 mint sets I got on the cheap from Bullion Shark (online dealer). Unfortunately, It has doubling but not as dramatic as the big $$$ one so it's my Baby 1969 double die. I will keep my hopes of finding the big daddy one day. I do plan on having it checked by Mr. Wexler in the next few weeks or so. Thanks for having a look.

It's always neat to find a 69 with any kind of doubling.
BUT, That isn't a doubled die it is MD, machine doubling, worth a cent.

  18. Yep, I was kind of thinking that myself but I thought the lines were a bit sharp on edges & that a machine double looks like a bit more of a scrape. Regardless I do not think it is worth much from the research I did.

You have that backwards MD is flat and shelflike taking the thickness away from the raised device. Any kind of scraped look is a form of die deterioration.

The ‘69 cents are well known for machine doubling and as we all know, it’s not a doubled die.
