You have to take into consideration that this is exactly how kit works with mint releases. Some collectors acquire orders, while others other for resale. The fact that these coins (400,000) might sellout in two weeks is amazing to me. That's a huge number for a commemorative coin. My coin stats aren't the greatest, are there many other modern commems. with mintages that high?

The 2001 buffalo sold out and has held its value nicely. You never know for sure but I doubt I'll get burned on buying two.

True, this is a large mintage for commems, but extremely low for a U.S. Coin with a decent demand. The Buffalo Dollar, with a higher mintage is still doing well, although it has declined a little. Other issues have not done as well.

As for the modern commem series, many releases with lower mintages, that apparently had little demand when available from the mint, saw increased demand and prices, when low mintages were established. If demand increases for the series, many mintages are low enough to see a related increase in price. I for one, have collected the series from the beginning (only the lower mintage unc/matte proof versions) and I’m very happy with the returns – someday I’ll come up with an annualized rate of return. As for future appreciation, I’m holding my collection, as many issues have very low mintages that could see moon prices with significant increased demand.

Many current mint issues have decent long term rates of return. Contrary to the belief of many “Old Timers” in our hobby, not all mint products decline in value, some have a 20 to 30 years history of increased prices. So, the mantra, “Wait to buy it for less”, simply is misguided advice for many issues. It’s not like the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s when mintages were very high, today there are some true rarities, that have only gone up over the long term.

Spoke to a woman at the Mint this morning. She said there's a high likelihood the silvers are sold out today. They only left about 1000 units last night...

Keep in mind folks that these coins will be offered to the general public at major league ball parks and other popular atractions. This coin has a much higher profile than most other modern commems, and as such, a higher demand. Whereas the modern commemorative series is usually visible to collectors only, this particular series of coins will enjoy a more far reaching audience..........

Yeah, the woman said they sent over a million brochures. They were sending to special interest groups as well as past customers who have not been active in a long time. That could account for the big mess, between invalid credit cards, opening new accounts, etc.

I just ordered 5 more silver dollars, the order showed right away and says backordered to 7/7/2014. We’ll see if I get them. The amazing thing is the mint bag shows on the order as, “Item is no longer available”. Hmm, these bags are going to be worth something!

The clad half dollars maybe, the entire mintage for the gold and silver have already been spoken for by orders on the mint website. If berneck1 is right and they've sent out a million brochures they may have some angry people when they find the mint is offering coins for sale that they don't have and can't make.

They'll have to get in line. There's already a ton of collectors fuming over things like this..........

We'll see how great this sell out is. A bunch of these were probably bought by flippers, so a bunch will be on the market, keeping prices down.

We'll see. I did not buy them to flip. Still, the demand appears pretty strong.
