I watched HSN over the weekend and as expected, they had the Silver Proof and Unc. Baseball hall of Fame in hand, explaining they had to fly "someone" to Baltimore to pick these up, they said they had over 2 thousand in hand and already graded PF70 and MS70 by ANACS. I especially loved the scene where the HSN woman (not knowledgeable about coins)tried to move the slab and the coin collector Mike, stopped her saying it was in a sample holder...I noticed it was being held together with scotch tape. Haha, but hey it was graded a 70, shouldn't that be sealed?...lol Anyway, I always love watching these shows for giggle. By the way, the PF70 Silver HOF coin was being sold for $179.95 (4 flex pays of $44.95) and telling the viewers good luck getting these from the mint even if you have a confirmation order #....haha. Anyone else see the show this weekend? Thoughts?
Didn't/don't watch HSN, but I did see their buyers trying to buy from those in the US Mint booth line at Baltimore.
Haha! I wish I could have seen that. They didn't have a holder to fit because all the TPG's have to use a new, slightly thicker holder.
Click on the second picture and a video will start with the HSN coin presentation http://www.hsn.com/products/2014-pr70-dcam-baseball-hof-silver-dollar-coin/7449086
That was pretty funny the line was out the door... I was like wtf is this?!? but then I realized people LIKE to throw away their money! lol im sorry I don't know the coin kind of looks cool.
Question??...Will the new wear off these and then the price will fall or am I off base here with that assumption.... my two I bought from the mint ........ say June before I get them.....
There was much profit to be had waiting on that line, too bad I arrived too late to the show Friday to acquire more of those baseball commems.
Keep in mind, the slabbed coins are selling for a premium for two reasons.....the first is the fact that they are in hand. Some collectors just don't want to wait. Second, and most important, they are buying a "rare" label that was only available to those who submitted their coins at the show. The raw coins are selling for a premium for the first reason listed above. Once the masses get their coins the prices will fall for the raw coins. The coins with the special labels will hold their value for a short time then begin to fall as seen with the Reverse Buffalo Gold coins. Will the special label coins ever sell close to what their non-special label cousins are....that is yet to be determined, but the Rev Proof Buffalo coins with the Chicago labels are still selling for a premium over the regular labels 7 months out from the initial release.
I bet his next show, he will have the $5 gold PR and MS in hand, for some reason, he did not have them ready for this past weekends showing. Maybe the red oak presentation boxes were not ready yet?! "Please do your family right and pick up a few of these if you can, pick up a few of these if you can" -2 Times Mike!
Yes I did. I have finally found out buying coins off of HSN is a rip off. I believe the next order of the hall of fame coins from the mint comes out in June 2014 at $51.00 for the Silver proof coin. Big differents from $179.95. Now grant you don't get a fancy red wood box and it being graded but the mint will give you a great looking blue box, LOL.
It's a sad day when HSN is considered the better buying choice than eBay for the HOF coins, the prices I am seeing on eBay are breathtaking to say the least!
I was at a coin show where someone was trying to sell their coins they bought from HSN, only to find out they were barely worth half of what he paid. It's been a while since the mint has put out a commem that generated this much excitement (really the last one that people jumped on this quickly were the Ben Franklin commems). I'd probably chalk that up to the unusual shape, the first time the US has tried something like this. I'm hoping to at least get the half and the dollar. I'm pretty sure I can get the half straight from the mint but it's looking like I was too slow on the draw on the dollar (I kind of forgot to check on the release date until it passed lol) so may have to get that from a 3rd party. I'll wait a while until the hype dies down a bit and the price settles.
I agree, I went along with a friend to a LCS with his mostly purchased through HSN coins so he could sell them, this is after I already went through them and got a few I really wanted and he gave me a friend price, but I told him what I thought the remaining were really worth and part of him wanted someone else to validate it and he was literally shocked at the prices he was being offered compare
