http://www.usacoinbook.com/item/1955-double-die-lincoln-wheat-cent-51483/ Check this out - guy wants $1200.00 for it. Wish I had the money. Just thought someone here might be interested .
I'm suspicious at best as to that coins authenticity. There are VERY good die struck counterfeits of these coins. This coin being sold raw is a big red flag to me. I'm not saying it's not genuine... But you must be extra careful with these coins.
His description doesn't ease your suspicion? 1955 double die Lincoln cent I found it in my pocket one day and I'm looking to sell it to a coin collector for a keep sake it's in very good condition for it's age and I need the money for car insurance needs I think 1000$-1200$ is a fair price for it for it's age and quality also I did not certify this eaither.
Im not a pro of DD but Im almost certain this is fake the red flag for me He has NO straight on frontal photos they are all side ways and at a slant. Why?
http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/1955/55counter.html Look at the lack of separation in the letters in LIBERTY. Judge for yourself, but I'm willing to bet that's a struck counterfeit.
1955 DDOs are one of the few coins that almost always require a hands on to determine authenticity. My gut is usually pretty good about these... I think it's a fake.
There is always another sucker some place to sell it to. ( But check the diagnostics first ). I certainly wouldn't buy it without a hands on or a top cert, color is off to me.
FYI, There is a known die struck counterfeit that includes a dimple/dent at the very bottom of the left wheat stock (at the very-very end of the thin stick). The photo is blury but I might be seeing this little dent at the tip. I agree that the 55/55 is one coin that should always be inspected in person or purchased already within a trustworthy slab.
