Well, for coins that I value, but DON'T put in my home-made albums for airtites, this is what I do: I put the coins in Airtites with black rings. Then I sandwich the (T-size, A-size) Airtite in a US dollar 2X2 and staple 'er shut. Yeah, it looks kinda ghetto, with the mylar bulging out, but it holds together. It also will stack well on its edge inside my coin box with others like it. The only problem is price: A 2X2 alone is a lot cheaper than buying airtites AND 2X2s...
What kind of 2x2 are you people using? Cardboard coming off, staples, compressed air ...why would you put your coins in those cheap things? There are high quality 2x2's out there, bit more expensive but totally worth it. Lighthouse (Leuchtturm), Lindner, Hartberger, are all great brands. They leave no cardboard behind, it won't come off with age, they don't require staples. I would never staple one of my 2x2's. The only thing is to make sure you use larger diameter 2x2 than your coin diameter, so that the edge of the coin won't make contact with the glue on the holder. All my coins are in 2x2's and never had a single problem. Those staples may rust with time, if you use an album and place those stapled 2x2's one on top of another....poor coins on the last album page will have to support pounds of weight, and those staples may cause problems not only to album pages, but to coins themselves. You can buy 1000 of those 2x2's for about 50 euros, that's little more than a nickel a piece.
I use Ait-Tites too...the one with the black rings. The company says the rings are inert. As much as I like the Ait-Tites I just bought a used Dansco and stuffed my ASEs into and I really like it!
Any excuse to play with my coins.... "Sorry honey, I would love to mow the lawn/build that shelf/renovate the bathroom again, but I need to remove the newly formed cardboard dust from my coins!!"
As far as I know, there are only 2 types of 2x2s...the kind you seal with staples and the kind that come with adhesive tabs to seal. Now, I don't know the specific formulas they use...but my only concern would be what is in the adhesive and is it inert? Glues contain all kinds of chemicals and I'm not sure if I want my coins around that. But, that said...it might be the same stuff that adheres the Mylar window to the cardboard (perhaps another reason why 2x2s aren't all that great).
This is so frustrating sometimes in the dental chair. It's amazing how many people are so much more knowledgeable about oral health and I am.
For dollar size airtites I use these pages to store them in binders: Here is the link to the review I did: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/airtite-storage-pages-mini-review.237363/#post-1800457
Seriously, for coins which are stored in rows in a box or case and largely undisturbed except for occasional viewing, is wear due to movement in 2 x 2 mylar flips really a concern? It's not like I'm lugging them around like a dealer or something. And would you store proof coins in mylar flips, or stick to airtites for those when they are unworthy of slabs?
How long are you going to own those coins - 10 years, 20, more ? And how many times will you look at them or move the box/case in that time ? And is just a little bit of wear acceptable ? If the coin is unc, that little bit of wear turns it into an AU coin. But no matter what grade, a scratch imparted to the coin by the flip could turn it into a problem coin. Is that acceptable ? If a coin is worthy of being in your collection at all is it not worth 50-60 cents to buy a holder for it that will not harm the coin but protect it for your entire lifetime ? Those are really the questions you should be asking yourself.
Not to me as the last time I checked, there simply was no movement of the coin in the 2x2. I think that anybody who believes that a coin moving under the mylar flip in a 2x2 is going to cause measurable wear is really reaching. Coin wear is usually a combination of weak die strike and metal to metal rub such as what occurs when coins are in pockets or scraped along a cash register till while being counted out or sliude across a countertop or being shook up in a penny jar or any other number of conditions where a coin would come into contact with a "hard" surface.. I just do not believe that mylar plastic will cause ANY type of measurable wear or even luster breaks. Especially if they are in a 2x2 box.
putting coins into Dansco type albums with slides is far more likely to rub an Unc coin into an AU coin. 2X2's are fine if you flatten the staples and don't overcram the box, put your really good stuff in slabs ( PCGS or NGC).
Believe what ya want, but even PCGS warns that coin flips will cause wear on a coin. And there have been several articles written about it over the years. Think about it for a minute, if the softest cloth known to man can cause wear and luster breaks on a coin, what in the world is to stop a coin flip from doing the same thing ? Many people think wear on coins has to do with the hardness of the objects the coins come into contact with. It doesn't, it only has to do with the fact that the coins come into contact with, literally, anything and that there is movement. And it will absolutely cause wear.
Coin Flips and 2x2's are two different cats and the flips that PCGS warns against were the flips used for submitting coins where grit caused some hairlines on the coins when it was slip into the flip. Their alternative were some small poly bags that the coin went into and then went into the flip. A coin secured in a correctly fitting 2x2 with whatever means you prefer (flattened staples, tape, gummy tape) will not move in any amounts large to cause wear or damage. Folks can believe whatever they want to believe and the above is what I believe due to my experience with 2x2's and flips.
The info I found from PCGS related to flips specifically concerned PVC flips. Only caution on Mylar was inserting and removing the coin. I'll use the flips for common coins, and plastic snap cases for anything critical. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yeah they are. But my response to Miko was in regards to his comment specifically about flips - not cardboard 2x2s. See (his) post #52. That said, coins can, and do, move around inside cardboard 2x2s, not as much as in the filps, but they still move. And that can cause wear on them as well. As well as light scratches from the cardboard dust due to that movement. The bottom line is this, cardboard 2x2s, all kinds of plastic flips, albums, envelopes, they all have their problems for coin storage. Every single one of them can cause harm to the coins in one or more ways. Hard plastic coin holders that hold the coin secure so it cannot move, and there are many types, are the best option when it comes to coin storage and protection because no harm can come to the coin as a result of using them. That cannot be said of any of the others.
