I've been buying a lot of reference books on coins lately too here's what I got the last couple months with a couple more in the mail
My latest addition is a Antoninus Pius tetradrachm that I got a couple of weeks ago. It had bad photos so I got it pretty cheap. It does have shiny surfaces so it made it hard to take photos. So it wont win a beauty contest but I like it anyways & who doesnt like hefty silver! Antoninus Pius, (138A.D. - (161 A.D) Billon Tetradrachm O: AVT K T AIL ADR ANTWNINOC CEV CEB, bare head right. R: L - B (year 2), Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. Alexandria mint, 138 - 139 A.D 12.7g 24mm
Nope, farthest I have been overseas is Hawaii. Would love to visit the british museum and even boston has one for ancients now.
Yeah, modern commemoratives. My son's birth year, and two very low pop coins, with none better, so why not? Seller's pictures, as they have not arrived yet.
Nice pick up. What did you grade it? VF? or better? Did you Overton it yet? Hard to be sure, but possibly O-101
I put it on another thread on here for the "What's it worth" It's labeled as a 1806 Knob 6, Large Stars VF20. I'm guessing it could be anywhere between a 20-30... some of the 30's I've seen have been more worn than mine... so I guess we'll see. I just sent it out to NGC today, so I should know in a month or so what it actually grades out as Might put up a guess the grade for this one, see what some of the opinions are... is the O-101 a common? I have the book for 1816-1838, and the RE halfs, but not for the Draped series.... I've always loved the eagle on the reverse, but most of them are worn badly. I really didn't look much at the obverse of this coin, as I fell in love with the reverse.
Paid a little more than I probably should have, but I'm a sucker for a high-grade Peace Dollar of any date with exceptional eye appeal and without a multitude of nasty milk spots and bag marks.
How do you protect yourself from buying a Chinese fake when buying raw coins like these? Not saying your coin is a fake ... but I would worry about it, myself. Are you planning on submitting to PCGS or NGC for verification?
