Bought this 1942 D nickel on ebay the other day and just got it in. Was hoping it might be a D/horizontal D. When I examined it under magnification, the mint mark looked weird, like it was soldered on. I took the best pics I could. Any thoughts on the blobs on the west and south side of the mint mark? Could it be an RPM, PMD, or just debris? Are there any die markers for the real horizontal D nickel?[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Either way, I only paid $1.50 for it.

the better question is why would someone fake a 42-D Jefferson?

Don't know, but high grade ones sell for decent money. MS66 's are about $65-$70. I don't know much about counterfeiting and how hard it is to add mint marks...

this coin is nowhere near MS-66, though. This coin is worth about what you paid for it.

$1.50 isn't worth it to a counterfeiter, though. There's no profit in it.

I understand that. It may have been high end when it "was made" and then put into circulation and is now common condition. Is there a way to just delete this thread?

The bottom loupe of the horizontal D clearly protrudes from the west side of the mintmark on the 1942-D over Horizontal D and is visible even in the circulated grades.
