    Hi Guys,
I would just like to know how many 1960 D Small Date pennies were printed. My father literally has thosands of them and wanted to know why my grandfather had them all
    Thanks,

The US Mint only tracked the number of coins which were minted by the date and mm so the exact number is unknown. Typically, in situations such as this, knowledgeable collectors will go through a certain number and calculate a percentage based upon what is found in their sampling.

BTW, the correct term is "minted", not printed.

Going by the Professional 5th Edition Guide Book, as of its printing there was 2,288 plain small dates and 2,277 "D" mint marked small date coins certified. Double check yourself on the size. For the 1960 small date, the 1 and 9 are the same level. The large date, the 1 is significantly lower than the top of the 9.

About equal numbers of large/small data 1960D coins were minted. The 60D small date is not worth any more than the large date.

Your grandfather probably thought the 60D cents were as valuable as the 60P small dates - which is definitely not the case. It's a popular misconception.
