I just spent a little time going over the first 27 pages of this thread and found several references to a web site Ikegroup.org but couldn't find the site. Does anyone know if it is still around or is it gone? Is there another site for IKEs?
The Ikegroup.info is a great resource for anyone interested in Ikes. There is a wealth of knowledge over there, and they are in the middle of revamping their DIVa program (think VAM for Ikes and you'll understand). The ground work that is being laid will hopefully pull the series into the mainstream for collectors. A lot of interesting discoveries are being made over there. Just remember one thing, it's not a huge community and there aren't a ton of contributors on the Ike Group site (if more than 3 forum members are logged in at any given time it is a busy time), so if you post something or have questions, don't expect the sort of rapid response that you get here at cointalk. That being said, if you have Ike questions or want to get into the series, there is no better place to go than the Ike Group.
I have seen some 32 coin dansco album sets sell for around $200 on Ebay do y'all think that is a good way to go for Grand kids to get started. Is there any potential for these type raw sets or should I just concentrate on graded coins?
It all depends. If you're looking for an investment, don't look at coins. You may end up making a few dollars down the road on your collection, but never count on that happening. Treat it as a hobby. That being said, I think there is a good amount of upswing in Ike interest. A Dansco is a good way to start, I have one and it was the first set of uncirculated Ike's I purchased. You may even get lucky with such a set and it could contain some varieties. Now I mostly deal in PCGS Graded Ikes. PCGS is going to have the most liquidity in the current market place. NGC still hasn't shaken the stigma, at least in the Ike community, that they are a least one grade higher than their PCGS counterparts, and thus overgraded. For someone looking to start collecting, the Ike series is a cool choice. They are the last of the large dollars, so their size grabs your attention, and it is a relatively short series. MS grade coins can be readily found, and for very little money you can put together a good basic set in a lower grade. From there, there are tons of varieties, many of which are naked eye visable, so as you grow with the series your collection can grow as well.
I'll echo what bhaugh said, the Ikegroup site is filled with knowledge and the folks who have been collecting and studying the series for decades, but it's not as chatty which is good and bad. I was here on cointalk for a long time and just started participating over there about 2 months ago. As for your question, the Dansco is a good way to get started, it'll help you understand the coins in the series, as it is a small series which is part of the reason I love collecting it - there's not a ton of coins to have to get like say quarters, but there's a whole ton of interesting back stories and history to the series. There's only a few (TPG recognized) varieties at the moment, but as was said there's a whole bunch of research currently going on and new varieties are showing up now more regularly. Most of your garden variety Ikes can be gotten for a reasonable cost from mint/proof sets. The only ones that are "harder" are 71 and 72 P & D mints since those were circulation-only coins, but there's plenty on eBay and other sites. Me, I took the easy route and started by buying 3 mostly complete PCGS registry sets from one of the Ike gurus, 19Lyds, and that really got me into the series. I've been trying to finish off those registry sets lately and I'm real close. As an example of what you could end up spending going for graded, here's the link to some of my registry sets currently in progress, of which there's 6 I'm working on at the moment: MS-63/64/65 business strike: http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=119381&ac=1 http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=119389&ac=1 http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=119391&ac=1 Complete w/proofs: http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=120455&ac=1 Good luck!
I was just in my registry set doing a little spring cleaning, and I noticed that my 1972 PR69DCAM that I cherried and resubmitted has properly been attributed as FS-101! http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/24998285/ I opened up my inventory and was like, "Why hello there Mr. Top Pop!" Great way to break up my mid-morning slump. Now I can't wait to get it back in hand.
So, just got the grades of my last submission. This is the one I was waiting to see, and the only one I had done a Trueview on. Pictures didn't catch the real in-person pop of the colors, but not too bad. The purple rim toning is really noticeable and nice up close. It graded out at PR-68CA. Not bad, was hoping for a 69, but I'm sure the toning was what kept it back.
This thread needs a little love... here's a group that just came back from PCGS: MS-64 MS-64 PR68CAM (and one Greg might recognize ): MS-67:
Updated my registry with some new True Views. http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/publishedset.aspx?s=107423 Let me know what you think of my set!
