Did they provide a reason why they did that?

So they graded it because it was made by the mint, therefore not technically a counterfeit. Very.......creative! It is like a restrike of a restrike of a fantasy coin!

It is BELIEVED to have been made at the mint, no actual proof but likely. But for what official reason would it have been done? What you have is a clandestine copy of a clandestine restrike of an official fantasy.

    Very interesting story.

Weren't all the 1804 Dollars made long after 1804? I know the story behind them is somewhat odd...but I don't know it.

The Class I (originals) were minted in 1834-5 as presentation pieces for foreign dignitaries (eg. King of Siam, Imaum of Muscat), and the Class II & III dollars were coined in 1858 by mint employees engaged in a scandal that involved minting coins/medals for personal financial gain. The book on the subject THE FANTASTIC 1804 DOLLAR by Eric P. Newman & Kenneth E. Bressett is very interesting.

Interesting. So they were never meant for any kind of commerce of use. They truly are US mint issued fantasy pieces.

Well yeah, but proof coins are never intended for commerce anyway.

That's true...I guess these just seem different, but I suppose they aren't.
