I find alot of them. My theory is the mint either changed coin press machines or reset the strike pressure to compensate for the new planchets, creating lots of die clashes. Any documentation on this?

sounds like a good theory, i myself have a tube full of 83 and 84 clashes, always wondered about it myself..

That sounds plausible, but do we know if striking a primarily zinc cent is tougher than striking a copper cent?

Zinc is softer material, so I imagine that the strike pressure who need to be adjusted lower. Softer material, less pressure, less die wear etc..
But no matter the pressure, a set of die clash dies still require a missing planchet in the press. That's where the "new machine" theory comes in play. Just so any of them for that year.

    I haven't seen a zinc 1982 die clash yet
