That's a great Sutler Token Matt. I don't know if you have Schenkman's book on sutlers, but if not he lists this one as I25B and an R-8. Mauzy also issued a 5 Cent token. The reference was published in 1983 so things may have changed by then. Bruce
Never heard of Sutler tokens before but this looks like an old military trade token. Any idea what year this was?
These were used during the Civil War Jwt. They were issued by regimental sutlers for use by soldiers to buy goods from him. The sutler traveled with the various units and supplied them with a variety of things, some that were hard to come by through regular supply channels. Alcohol was banned but I'm sure some "seeped" into the mix. As far as I know, the Confederates didn't employ sutlers in their army. I've never seen or heard of any. Most of these pieces are rare and pretty pricey these days. A great area to collect if you can afford them. Bruce
