Kicking Around an Idea!

I've been considering coding a personal website for ancient coins for over a year. There are a few thing holding me back such as the following.

    - Low quality scanner photos of coins.

    - Coding your own site requires hosting space which might be difficult to obtain.

    - So many topics are already covered. It would be difficult to not be too redundant in article topics.

    Some features I had planned are;

-My own personal gallery of coins

    - Articles
Low budget shopping - getting your coins.
Reviews of books I own or a copy of.
    Links of sites
A map or two of the ancient world that you can hover mouse over regions and get coins.
A primer on using ERIC II
A primer on using RIC volumes
Set vs. free for all collecting.
    ETC....

Then there is the design factor of figuring out what kind of site layout to use. The layout to use isn't clicking with me at the moment. It has to have a universal style look for all pages, expandable, with decent navigation.

Any ideas or honest opinions like, hey your images suck. So don't bother until you get a good camera, etc. lol

I am bored too and tired of kicking the idea around.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure that TIF is also currently trying to create a new gallery of her ancient coins (umm, is that what you're trying to do?) ... you're looking for a way of displaying your ancient coins? (or did I misunderstand your thread?)

    Hi

I already have a couple galleries but I would like it to include articles and a few special features which is my main idea.

Forvm ancient coins is very good about providing free web space for coin sites including mine. Finding a complete list is hard but some are promoted on this page:
    http://www.forumancientcoins.com/resources/Collectors_Resources.html
Mine is not there at the moment but is listed under Numiswiki:

I'd suggest coding some pages and asking Joe if he'll take them. He also gives free space for a simple catalog of collections but I do not use this feature. Many do.

At FORVM, do you have FTP access and can update when you like?

    TIF Always learning.

Gil, check out Wix. It's free unless you exceed certain volumes or if you want certain extras-- but I bet it has everything you need without upgrading. It's HTML5, very easy to customize. You can do much more than just photos. Articles, links, whatever.

My site, which I've been too busy to work on lately: http://inaruvi.wix.com/tifcollection

Eventually I'll add history and tidbits to most pages. I've started with some of them. Still have many many more coins to add.

I think your site is nice and is promising.

I've been debating on using a template site like yours or hand coding which I can do. Just haven't made up my mind yet.

That's very nice, TIF. Your photos are beautiful, and I like the mouse-over attributions. Well-done!

    I agree.

On the other hand, my photos ain't so good. :( Should I still proceed in making a site?

Personally I would wait and develop some more photo skills, maybe buy some new equipment, etc. It took me a year of fiddling around before my pics got to the point where I'm not embarrassed by them.

I have a similar project in mind - a site dedicated to Nabataean coinage, but I've got a lot of research and collecting to do first. Maybe a few years down the line...

Most of the articles you proposed don't require much in the way of photos. Code the how to use sections first and the links section while you work on photo skills.
