I just got back into collecting after a 35yr lay off. I have always been and probably always will be a Type Set collector. As a kid I could never afford golf but always wanted one. So I began to put together my 7070 Type Set and decided to complete that childhood dream and bought a graded $5 Indian just to compliment it. I was almost paralyzed at the thought of spending that much on a coin, but gold was down($1190).

That Indian arrived and I was thrilled. I would just sit and look at it with intense satisfaction. A 45 year desire fullfilled. Not only is it gold, its and awesome Indian gold. It took me less than 2 days to decided I wanted the $10 Indian since it was another cool design. This was a bit more pricey and I have never, ever in my life spent that much on a coin. I was literally sweating bullets as I clicked the buy button. Done. Committed. No turning back. Holy crap, what have I done? That's a ton of money that could go a long way to fill a 7070.

It arrives and as expected I'm again excited and love the look. So I sit back in contentment as gold starts creeping up. I'm thinking about the money these coins might make me. If gold hits X I will have more in gold than Ispent on them.

Then it hits me......The coin I really wanted was always the St Gauden. That's too much money. No way. Gold creeps up to about $1250 and I tell my wife I wish I'd have bought a St G. Too bad gold went up.

Well, a week later it dipped a touch and I say now or never. If I wait and gold goes crazy(no way to predict) I will never be able to afford one of these. And then I was like a man out of control!! That week I bought a $20 St Gauden, $20 Lib, $10 Lib, $5 Lib and $2.5 Indian. LOL!!!! I'm not made of money but I found a way to make it work without going into debt. Just a reallocation of hobby money for a while.

I'm really glad I did. Gold has climbed which did affect some prices lately but not too much. I now have these coins and know the smaller ones I still need to fill, since somehow I've now put myself into a gold type set without meaning to, aren't as volatile in pricing with gold since their content is so low.

That's an awesome set you have but I'd really work on filling the big dogs next because they have such a large amount of gold in them. If the price jumps to $1900 again(I don't expect it) you might be sad.

Now if it was me, and I'm no expert like lots on here. Those $1 golds you have usually carry a huge premium over spot. I'd consider selling/trading them toward a $20 if you want one. If gold goes up $500/oz the big coins will jump a lot, but those have such little gold content they likely won't rise more than $50-100ea when you want to get them again. Just a thought. You can still find lots of PCGS MS63 $20 Libs and StG for $1500-1600 even with gold up a bit.

No matter what you choose, good luck and have fun. I love my gold page and so does my wife.

Thanks for the good advice. I am indeed going to get $20 gold next. I have 2 large gold coins now. I have the 2009 ultra high relief, and the 2013 reverse proof buffalo. While I know you are giving good advice, I can not part with any of my gold coins. I will just save my money for the big $20 coins and get them next.

Are you going to include the Capped Bust coins?

The Capped Bust gold is not in my plan as of now. They seem a little out of my league right now.

I'm hoping to also do a gold type set too have a decent start hope to have one example (any denomination probably a $5) of both the liberty cap and the capped bust one of each and I'll be a happy collector

Picked up the Saint to add to the set. It really is a very impressive coin!

Very Nice. I told you you'd feel like you really have something holding the weight of that. Now you are hooked. did you get a good price?

I got a pretty good price, but have nothing left to spend on coins for a
long while. Will now have to save for the $20 gold liberty to match the Saint.

I think the St. Gaudens is my favorite...but I do think the Draped Bust is beautiful. But, I try not to think about Draped Bust gold too much because I know it will take an act of powerball for me to get one.

Me too I'm hoping to someday one of those and one capped bust but was referring to the silver especially as my real passion is the early dollars love the trade dollar design too I wish they'd design pretty coins today with all the artists and technology out there today ugly coins of dead politicians are the best they can do

While I agree that we should return to a more Liberty themed coin design...I don't know if we would be happy with the results if we did. Today's coin made out of clad are much harder than the old silver and gold coins so the relief would probably be terrible. Combine that with the need to produce in high volume efficiently without ruining dies and I'm sure the results would look bad. Would it be better than what we have...probably. Would we be satisfied, I doubt it.

In my opinion today's coins are just plain terrible not just design content I'd rather have $1,5,10,20 etc coins made outta silver and gold or alloys of the same rather then the paper crap we got now how about gold $500 1000 and 2000 coins for major purchases a $100 bill don't even fill my fuel tank in my truck anymore

I'm late to the thread, but I must say your start is wonderful. Love that $10 Indian!

I dipped my toes in a gold type set. Have a couple quarter eagle indians. working on adding a coronet quarter eagle in MS! Hope to win it tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That's a beautiful MS63 St. Gaudens! Looks like it still has lots of luster left. When I do buy the St. Gaudens, I'm saving for a 65. As it's an iconic design and one of my favorites, I'm going to spend the coin!

I'm a big fan of the $3 Indian Princess Head design. I'll probably need to pick one of these up in AU though.

I like the design of the pre-1807 capped bust eagles (right facing), but the left facing is not my deal. I'll probably never complete a type set, but will add plenty to be happy with!

    Congrats on your endeavor!
