Lanny; We appreciate your photographs of you currency but keep in mind this thread is for currency you just acquired as opposed to currency you now own. I do like your $1000 bill regardless. I have been shopping around for about a year, trying to get the bill and the right price for it, in my collection.
When you said here are some more of my favorites as opposed to purchases, it sounded like they weren't new to your collection. My bad for misunderstanding and my apology. Post away!
This one snuck past me until now. It almost seems impossible that this kind of error would occur on a star note -- which is meant to replace other errors of this type. How rare are star note errors?
I've only seen one in the flesh, a younger guy was walking with it at my local coin show. I think he just wanted to get it appraised -- didn't seem to have an interest in selling it. He wasn't even aware of the importance of the star in addition to the giant gutter fold.
Star notes are printed on the same equipment as non-stars, and they are not scrutinized any more than regular notes, assuming the stars come in a pack and are not inserted individually into another pack as replacements. They are scarce, but not prohibitively rare. If we suppose that 0.01% of currency has an error of some kind that escapes the BEP, then that same percentage can be applied to star notes. Because there are far fewer star notes printed, the number of star note errors is comparatively small. Quantity (supply) is simply what drives the price up.
1966-A $100 in perhaps VF-25. Good deal for only $20 over face. I have two nice large size surprises on its way. Hopefully the storms here in the West won't slow it down. Boy did they cost a bundle. Probably in my top 3 most expensive acquisitions. Based on Track & Price, the first note is at least 15 points higher than the next highest grade known. It's raw, so that's just my opinion of the grade from the photos. It should bring a nice return. The second note I will be paying off for a long... long time. Thank god for Bill Me Later and the 10% eBay bucks promo.
They really must be top of the line. I have never seen you post a notice like this before. I'll chance it and say congratulations without ever seeing them. :>)
trading in $500 in coin roll hunting leftovers for fifties, got a VF-XF 1934 $50 and a AU 2004A $50 that is slightly off center (there is a huge bottom margin, and no top margin, but none of the design is missing)
wow. i want to know where i can get one for only $120! i've been looking, and in VF25-35 most of them are $160-$180
Patience. And on eBay. I would've settled for a 1966. The 1966A, being considerably rarer, sealed the deal. I'm generally an opportunistic buyer/collector. It took nearly 2 years for a price like this to come up. Considering eBay fees, $120 is an impressively low price.
I too like E-Bay. Good deals can be had there with patience and research. Can't just jump at the first pretty thing that comes along.
$120 is face on a $100 on eBay. eBay used to be better for deals, it's now overrun with garbage posts that make finding deals that much harder. Between that, a general uptick in prices, and the constant middle-man rentseeking of almost every other currency item, it's tough to get a deal like you used to. Funky got a good one though...
