What about those collectors who paid for the finest known example of a particular coin only to find out it's not anymore ?

That's the risk you run when you buy ultra high grade examples. If one is found finer...that's life.

Good point. I'm not crying for them by any means.

That's one of the reasons I would be careful paying big premiums on modern coins in top pops. There have to be millions of coins sitting in mint sets/proof sets that have not been sent in for grading yet. When they are sent in, it just might upset the apple cart.

Right. Like the 25th ASE set. Many, like myself, prefer them in the original packaging.

I like mine in it's original packaging too. But since so many have been graded 70s...I doubt there would be a huge value change if a bunch more were sent in.

It's the coins that only have a few known examples in the finest known grade...if suddenly 1 or 2 pop up, the population has doubled. That coin could have a significant price drop.

The pop reports don't reflect these coins either.... yet....

I am surprised that there has yet been no mention of any possible linkage to the $30,000 stolen from the San Francisco Mint by Chief Clerk Walter Dimmick during the turn of the century. Interesting that the face value of what was found is just $3,000 shy of the amount stolen, the mint state condition of the coins, the total amount of coins stolen (1,500) vs the amount found (1,427). The stolen coins were never found....

This couple must be in prior sound financial shape. If you can take your dog out for a walk, and while doing so find this in your yard, they must own acreage. One might think this wasn't an area they traveled in much before. They said they were worried people would show up and begin digging on their property, if they disclosed their location. Probably an estate of some kind?

I know right! The most I found on the ground was 2 dollars and these people find 10 million.

Yeah that's what I think, I don't think they need more money if they already have acres and acres of land. Watch them give only like 5% to either a childrens hospital or to the homeless and keep the rest for them selves.

Yes, but I doubt it is an unfounded "conspiracy theory".

It all adds up as they have been saying for hours at the CU board:

"THIS IS IT. Dimmick was the Chief Clerk! He was the inside man...To Catch A Thief!

OF COURSE there were bags there with mixed dates! They could have had open bags with random lots from the cashier, etc. That's easy to explain.

He was the last guy OUT of the vaults every time they were opened!

HE was the "tally man". It was his job to verify the amount of coins.

He was there starting in 1898. Grab 6 bags and that's that. How could he have a lavish lifestyle when the coins were buried?

He was accused and convicted and the coins were NEVER FOUND...well, not for about 114 years worth of "never"! [IMG]

One thing I kept marveling at when I heard of this hoard was how freaking amazing it was that anyone could even FIND coins like this back in the 1800's. Well now I think we know!

I guarantee that the Treasury Dept. is already scrambling, looking for enough ties to warrant a seizure. Here we go again!

    THIS SO ADDS UP.

    "WOW.[IMG]

"I don't think he fixed anything. He wasn't a collector he was a thief. Maybe all six bags were re-sealed mixed bags. Maybe he thought that resealed mixed bags would be less traceable than pristine bags of all one date. And perhaps the 54 mixed $5 and $10's could have been in a loose bag? Makes sense.

"All I believe is that this find was as fantastic as a dream and all of a sudden there's a huge Unsolved case that is missing a few answers and this sure seems to fit 80%!! Too bad, really. It seems that every 30 years there's some scandal rather than a great one with a few exceptions.

"This story is going to get very interesting."

The worst that David Hall and Don Willis can do is ban them from posting; I'm just waiting for the fallout on this....

I do not think these coins are solen especially with the long chronology of dates and varied mintmarks my belief a miser and a hoarder that didn't trust banks saved gold buried it in cans and died without ever telling anyone about his or her life savings
