Greetings fellow ancient collectors, Here is my most recent ancient addition which I purchased at my last coin club meeting. The one dealer who often has ancient coins had a small box filled with mostly Byzantine bronzes, but tucked among the Byzantines was this coin. I really am fond of the desert patina and the spear-wielding Minerva on the reverse. Here she is: Feel free to post your similar examples! -Mike
Cool addition. Fairly common for him. I just have a provincial. May be getting another next week. Claudius (41 - 54 A.D.) Attaleia, Pamphylia Æ 19 O: Bare head left. R: ΑΤΤΑΛΕΩΝ, helmeted head of Athena right. Attalea mint 4.44g Baydur 15, BMC 13 (plate 23, 8), Istanbul museum collection 7726 Ex. Heritage Auctions, Aug 9, 2012, #231232 Lot 62017, (part of)
The image is dark, but it looks like a decent example of this coin, albeit a common coin. Nice pickup. Here is my example of this coin with a different patina: CLAUDIUS AE As OBVERSE: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP P P, bare head left. REVERSE: Minerva advancing right, holding shield and brandishing a javelin, S-C across fields Struck at Rome, 50-4AD 10.5G, 25MM RIC 116
Very nice CoinMike! Are you also jumping from US coins over to ancients? I did it a year ago and I'm having a blast. In fact I'm selling off the US coins now in part to feed my ancient habit. Here's my Claudius. Claudius, 41-54 AD AE As, 29mm/11.3g; Rome Mint. Obv: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP. Claudius bust left Rev: CERES AVGVSTA, Ceres seated holding corn ears and torch, S C below. (RIC.I.94)
Claudius AE As. 9.2g, 30mm OBV: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR IMP, Bare head left. REV: S-C across field, Minerva standing right, brandishing spear and holding shield on left arm. REF: RIC 100, Cohen 84. BMC 149, BN 180, S 639
I don't know how old you are Coin Mike, But when something like that happens to me I call it a "Senior Moment".
Nice Claudius. His are among the cheapest you can get for 1st century. Funny, that was pretty much exactly my story a few years ago (I'm 22 now), but I got really deep into ancient and medieval and eventually limited myself strictly to those. I've pretty much sold all of my non-ancients of worth (mostly US) and like RaceBannon have used the funds towards ancients. And like Race, I'm having a blast collecting ancient coins!
Funny how this same story is repeated over and over (even me, although I still have all of my US collection from years ago).
CoinMike747 => congrats on a great new addition!! ... sadly, my only Claudius coin is still my good ol' forgery (*sigh*) ...
Every time I see this coin Steve, it scares me. I would never have guessed or even thought it could possibly be fake.
It looks like a nice Claudius, Mike. Good purchase! Looking at Steve's coin, I also find it hard to believe it is a fake - amazing how good that looks. I guess you have already covered this, but how did you find out it is a fake?
"Not exactly, my main interest is in US coinage, but as of the last few months ancients have really caught my interest. For me right now my collecting habits include ancient Roman coins and Barber halves." Not to hijack this Claudius thread, but it seems like many Barber collectors transition into ancient roman imperials...perhaps it's the Roman design motif on the Barber coinage? If you're still collecting Barber Halves as well, you're welcome to take a look at some of mine that I've put up for auction on eBay. I've already posted them in the for sale section here on CoinTalk. The auctions expire this Sunday evening. http://stores.ebay.com/Race-Coins-and-Collectibles?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
=> "yes" ... the seller was amazingly embarrassed and apologetic and was gracious enough to refund my cash (oh, and he also allowed me to keep this pretty cool lookin' forgery) ... the dude is a fricken Rockstar!!
