    How many " End of the world" bullion collectors do you read about on this forum who have buried and recommend such over a SDB ? People forget that death, insanity, brain damage , stroke, etc. can happen to anyone regardless of current age or health. It isn't enough to just share with a spouse or trusted person where such is located. Over years, one may forget where exactly ( no GPS) they burried it. Perhaps the former owner is hospitalized with Alzheimer's disease and doesn't remember, or a stroke and can't express their self :(

    You never know...stranger things have happened. My guess is...whomever buried it probably died before they could recover it. If I was going to bury a large sum of money somewhere, I doubt I would tell ANYONE. If only that person knew and took it to their grave...it could easily go undiscovered for a very long time.

    Heres an interesting conundrum. As coin collectors would you all keep the coins and just stay hush hush about it and add them to your collection. Or would you try and publicly sell them

    I think it depends on your situation. I would probably keep a coin or two and sell the rest. I could use a few million dollars right now. :D

    Waiting for a legal mind to chime in, but I doubt a mortgage holder has any claim to the coins - they don't share in any other profits made on the property. In some areas the property owner does not own the mineral rights, but are these coins minerals, I'd argue no. As for previous owners' heirs, I doubt it too. If it were my find, I'd contact a lawyer, before anyone else - assuming the finders did and the coins are close to on the market, they probably own them.

    I was starting to wonder this myself. If I buy a rental property...the bank isn't entitled to any of my profits as long as I pay my mortgage. The bottom line is, these coins are income.

    if they own the property regardless if there is a mortgage or not they should have no problem keeping the coins. i have seen multiple stories of people remodeling a house and finding paper currency in the walls. never had those people have to return the money found.

    I guess this find could also be stolen property, weren't stage coaches or trains robbed back then, so maybe an insurance company or the government could have a claim? Oh well, hope they checked it out before going public.

    Hey, with a find like that, they can almost buy a house in the SF Bay Area!

    Just read the article, yep they consulted a lawyer and a search was done for potential owners and nothing was found.

    I wonder if they kept track of what dates were found in what cans? If so, maybe they could get a fix on approximately when the different cans were buried or buried all at one time.

    The smart reason for not identifying themselves has nothing to do with the legal points brought up so far. Anytime a large find of treasure occurs lawsuits fly around, and as is usual in America they are mostly unfounded. Just look at omex. They can't find one hit without hundreds of lawsuits. Did you know Columbia university sued omex over one find? It's just a joke and if it was me, I would never have given any hints and would use a coin dealer from across the country to sell

    Agreed. They also don't want "treasure hunters" damaging their land.
    Unfortunately, there's enough evidence out there that I suspect
    the location will be public soon enough.

    As for OMEX their treasure recovery business has changed dramatically from the
    Mel Fisher days. I did not know Columbia University sued them and probably won.
    OMEX's has created a couple of very wealthy people, unfortunately, there are not
    public share holders.
