Thread #11 where I ask the fine members of CoinTalk their opinions on a coin I have already sent to CAC for review. Please let me know what you think, such as: Will it fail to CAC, and why? Will it be a green or gold CAC sticker? What (negative) issues does the coin have? What positive attributes does the coin have? Is the strike good or bad? Is the toning pretty or ugly? etc Up for consideration is a 1863 1C Indian Head Cent NGC AU55 in modern NGC holder, submitted to NGC by yours truly. Just because I bought this coin when I was 8 years old, don't hesitate to talk bad about it. I need to hear your thoughts!
While I think its cool you bought it at 8 band it's a nice coin but I'm gonna say no I think its overgraded my feeling is it's an xf-45 to au 50 on a good day so nice coin but no bean if it was xf-45 I'd say bean
Agreed. The hit across the lips is distracting and unappealing too, AKA "fish lips". Whole coin is kinda gritty looking IMHO.
Pretty much what I was seeing and a not real strong strike where liberty looks more worn then it is still a great coin for an 8 year old when I was 8 I collected ihc too but mine were g-vg
I feel like this one is a little over graded. I;m not an expert when it comes to early IHCs, but I would think it has more wear than AU55. I'm going to say no sticker on this one.
Not sure if you were in Maine in the 80's, but if so, do you remember the coin and stamp shop in the mall in Windham, Maine? I think it was Hall Stamp & Coin Co, but they are not in the Mall any longer, although they still seem to be in business. That's where I bought this coin, probably 1987-1989 timeframe.
I think it's great that you have a coin officially graded that you bought when you were 8. If it were me, I could care less what CAC had to say and I would never sell it.
Oh I agree with you about how special this coin is to me. But at the same time, I was sending in a batch and needed an IHC for my CAC Type set I am focusing on currently. I sent in 6 IHC from my childhood, and hoped that at least one would CAC. Still love the coins regardless of the sticker.
I wasn't here then was about the time we were moving around a lot as my father changed jobs a couple times didn't totally end up settled here until 2000 when I bought my house
I got a couple from my teenage. Years I need to send in most notably my 1837 no stars dime I wish I had my 1800/79 large cent I bought when I was about 8 but it got lost in a move about the same time he was buying that ihc was probably f-12 enviro damage
Sitting at the bar at pats pizza north windham as I do at least a couple tomes a week only another mainer would know pats
Been to both but been a regular at windham for years is closest to home I like it there and know everyone
I've been wanting to find a nice certified CN Indian cent for my type collection. A good number of the ones I have seen on Ebay in the AU range tend to be a lot like this one, with little to no luster and weak strikes that make the coins look overgraded. There were a couple I thought about bidding on a while back but didn't because they had bigger issues than this one does, such as rim dings and discoloration. I have decided that I would be better off saving up for one in the MS62-63 range. The auction prices for these appear to be higher than the price guides, so there must be a lot of demand. With that being said I sure wish I could have had something that nice when I was 8. My favorite store when I was that age was Coin Corner in Mason City, IA. One of my purchases that year was a 1982 Denver souvenir set. Since regular mint sets were not made that year the set lists for around $50 now.
Interesting thread idea, GP, and I wish you luck with your subs. However, I question the notion, at least in most cases, that anyone is going to be able to answer the question with any level of certainty other than possibly pulling candidates not worth sending; after all, opinions must be based off of photos. With that said, if you've been sending in (as opposed to buying), you probably already know what I am talking about.
Yes, judging from photos when I am buying coins in a speculative manner (to submit to CAC) is not easy, but buying a coin that has crap photos and getting a nice surprise is pretty fun. With people and bad photos, many times the coin is a nice surprise, but obviously sometimes it can hide issues. There are other hazards as well, I've been looking at so many coins, I put in a really bad bid on occasion. For instance, I bought a coin I thought was a MS65 Washington Quarter, when in reality if was a 64. So I paid full retail for the 64, when I really wanted to pay <70% of retail. My mistake, and I'll eat that one. For the members here being asked to judge my coins, I agree that the easiest to answer would be the coins that clearly not going to pass. But most people responding in my threads have been correct with their diagnosis. More threads to come.
