  3. Read this story earlier. While an awesome story, why on earth would you tell anyone about this.

  4. Great find! I wonder if they own the land or if the bank still does. If they are still paying on their mortgage, perhaps another party may want their share.

Hmm...I think I'm going to start digging up my lawn. Just to be on the safe side.

I wonder what the legalities of such a situation would be.

  7. Not sure, but one does not fully own a home and property until he/she pays off the mortgage. I am sure the wheels are turning at some mortgage company or bank unless a deal was already reached. Maybe they sold a few and paid off the mortgage before going public.

I bet everyone wished it was them who found those coins.

Crazy, literally as I was reading this thread, the CBS news on my tv just started talking about it.
    Amazing story.

I'd love to know the story behind this. Pre-bank life savings? Bank robbery stash?

The location is unlikely to stay secret much longer.

". . . While the lucky California couple who discovered the $10 million in gold coins won't reveal themselves, the shocking find illustrates the vivid, gold-lined history of the region.

The region where the ranch is located is known as California Gold Country.

Kagin and McCarthy would say little about the couple's property or its ownership history, other than it's in a sprawling hilly area of Gold Country and the coins were found along a path the couple had walked for years.

They are located on a section of the property the couple nicknamed Saddle Ridge, and Kagin is calling the find the Saddle Ridge Hoard. He believes it could be the largest such discovery in U.S. history. . . "

Even more clues are in the article.

I like this part of the article:

I don't blame the for that...don't want modern day 49ers digging up their land.

Haha the last time I went digging in my lawn all I hit was the sprinkler pipe. It wasn't buried deep enough.

Interesting point. If they have a mortgage the bank has a lien on the property until it's paid off. However, I don't know if the bank has any ownership rights if the mortgage is
    not in arrears.

Let me tell you a story about a couple named "X",
Poor Californian's barely kept themselves fed,
Then one day they were walking in the woods,
And up from the ground came a crusty old can,
St. Gaudens that is, Numismatic kwan!

Song to the Beverly Hillbillies theme song...

I find this story hard to believe. I can see someone burring a jar of silver dollars in a can or something, but $27,000 (with 3 zeros) face value of gold?

I know in the 20's when the banks failed many people buried money in their yard, but you don't forget about $27k, that would be equivalent to over $350,000 today.

Someone just "forgetting" that kind of money is ridiculous. Even today, that would be enough money to buy a new car, and you wouldn't just leave that sitting around going unnoticed.
