If PCGS graded them, I'm guessing the conserved them as well.

Thanks. I would imagine that these coins will fetch a premium in the fancy holders no? I doubt the other prices will come down much but it's not as if I will ever own one anyway.

I can dream about how those coins got there, though. If those coins could talk...

Amazon? Why Amazon? They don't even have a collectibles category lol

The cert numbers do not show up in the PCGS Database. I wonder what's up with that?

Good thing they are staying anonymous although I bet it is for legal reasons! I'm sure if their identities got out the descendant's of the previous property owners would be lawyering up to get their share. I wonder how hard they searched for potential rightful owners?

I noticed that too. It was probably a private submission and it's not technically complete yet.

Why are they not the rightful owners? If they bought the property legally, they should be the rightful owners. California probably has some of the strictest real estate laws and there was likely a title search conducted. Not sure why it would be their responsibility to search for prior owners of the coins. I know I wouldn't....

They found the coins on their private property so the coins belong to them.

If they were renting the property, were metal detecting on someone else's property, or metal detecting in national/state lands it would be a different story.

Can't think of an good example right now but I've heard of instances of hoards being found, the finders going to the media, and then the decedents of the previous owners suing to get procession of the hoard. Despite the finders owning the property currently, they might not have a claim to any lost, mislaid, or abandoned property found on their property. I believe there is a time period where the finders have to look for the rightful owner before they can claim the find for themselves.

Perhaps there is a member with a law background here on CoinTalk that can cite the statutes or caselaw on this issue.

Edit: Here is an interesting link.

I'm guessing the rightful owner died a long time ago.

Good lord. Talk about a dream find.

I'd be driving a perfectly restored 1972 El Camino SS the VERY....NEXT....DAY.
