I know I suggested cartwheels as a nice 18thC coin for Steves epic coin from each century attempt, but if Doug hadnt whetted my appetite by posting his pics of Cartwheels, I could have kept my bidding finger off the keyboard. I love these and haven't got my small collection out of storage for a look this year...so i bought another.....
possibly a die error on the obverse, or a very old scratch? which has dulled with age.
the edge is better than average for this coin and at £49.99, I dont think I overpaid too much!

I still want to get one eventually too. They look pretty neat.

It was going to happen anyway Steve............I was just taking it out on the computer after I lost a Maximianus coin on ebay earlier after pushing it up to $280! :(

They are such pleasing chunks to hold.....the twopence is twice the weight at 56g!!
Try and get one with a cleanish edge if you can as they get mashed up a bit being soft copper. go on....you know you want one soon!

I thought I had a good deal at £50 for this one, but you can pick them up for $30 or so.......depends whether you want to tick the box, or get a proper keeper which will last in the box.

It is a nice 1d despite the scratch.

I'd like to see the $280 Max. I did not see one on eBay recently.

Im always buying modern world coins. Just never feel the need to share a common canadian dime, shillings or misc. mexicos.

So that is a one pence? I never can tell from the photo. I admit I like these as well, buying any I stumble upon. I actually got a nice set of both here on CT a couple of years ago very reasonably.

Real nice! I like these big old coppers a lot. Yours is a great example for great price. Thumbs Up!

This one year issue of copper by the Soho Mint. Check out this great site:)

You are spot-on about these 56 gram 2-Pence coins having a propensity for getting mashed-up. This 2-Pence has no dings. The slab protects it for future generations (but that's about all the slab is good for).

Nice coin, not sure if its $280 though. Could be because of the left facing bust it went high. Eitherway I wouldnt attempt to clean it.

I would..:) Its not normal patina, but a layer of uneven hoard deposit.

It is not the left facing alone. It is the spear. I don't have a Maximianus but in January I paid $26.49 postpaid for this left facing Diocletian of the same (Trier) mint. Mine is the ordinary one without the spear. I hate to think what the coin might have brought had it included a helmet. I agree the coin would improve with light cleaning but my estimation of its value falls well below $280 spear or no spear.

I know several buyers who would pay that money and more for this forward facing spear reverse , this would have cleaned beautifully.
