You can...and it can. Dipping a coin always removes the surface layer of a coin. If you over dip the coin...the luster can become muted and it becomes a damaged coin.
Unless it is a special date ASE...all collector value would be lost and only the bullion value would remain.

Yes, I buy and sell more cats than anyone in the midwest. Just got bunch of Siberians in. Whats your point? I cant ask a question about coins?

no, when did i say you couldn't? what i was saying is that in an earlier thread you mentioned you were the largest coin dealer in the midwest. asking if you can dip a coin just seemed kind of - off. kind of like if a guy on a forum claimed he was the biggest bodybuilder in ukraine and wants to know what people think about steroids....

i think the overall atmosphere of CT would be swell if everyone just took a deep breath, and didnt get so jumpy and defensive every time a question is directed at them, or were challenged over an opinion. just sayin...

If it is a special date ASE and over dipped most of the collector value will disappear. If it does not have any numismatic premium then dipping it will not affect its bullion value. An ounce of silver is still an ounce of silver no matter how ugly it may be.

I think that was the point I made. While most people don't like to admit it...most (if not all) high grade silver eagles have a collector value slightly above melt. If you over dip those coins...all collector value is lost and it is only worth it's bullion value.

However, there are a couple special ASEs that would still be worth more IMHO. I think even on over dipped 1995-W or one of the reverse proof issues would still have more value than bullion or even the 2011-S. Those are the special date coins I was referring to.

  9. Some toned ASEs go for big bucks.

right. but it would still lower the value compared to it's own undipped version....

I know. I just wasnt sure if there was anything unique about ASE and the way they are minted, the finish of the coin, that would not react well with a dip.

Of course. I thought I made that pretty clear in both posts. I said:

I think Leon Hendrickson might object.... Not to the dipping part tho...

Do you have a toned ASE you are considering dipping?

well ill tell you what, according to your re-hashing of what you said....if you find a dipped 95-W, i will offer you to sell it to me for its bullion (spot) price, but because i am the most generous human, i will give you double. i expect you to honor that
