Cherrypickers Guide: Why are they selling for so much?

I'm a bit OOTL (out of the loop). I have a few surplus copies, and was looking at what they were going for. I was pretty shocked. Is there some reason?

Supply and demand.

 

When (some times) things go out of print the prices will skyrocket.

 

Don't they make a new edition every few years ?

My LCS doesn’t have any Bust coins. I was there yesterday and he said as soon as he gets one in it’s sells. Seems to me that collectors are tired of modern coins and have switched to the older coins.

 

Heh heh. I worked up some Barber dime transition variety stuff for them which ended in February 2020 with them saying there wouldn't be space for it. I was contacted again in April 2022, wanting my stuff again, can you get it done by next week? I passed. I don't know what the story is with them but the "new edition" has been in this state for three years.

I bought the Kindle version of Vol 2 for like $15.

 

Well the guide at one time the bible, now way to many web sites on just about every series.
Why worrie about a over priced hard to find book?
I love books...reference esspecially but draw a line at paying an inflated price.

 

I spoke with Whitman Publishing last week and they told me the new version of the CPG was due for release in August of 2023, which is at least a tentative date.

 

The same tentative reply has been stated for 2+ years.

 

Seems the new one is always coming out but never does. I’ve got a few laying around, and a few loaned out, one signed by JT.

 

I've actually called them every few months for the last few years, and this is the first time since 2019 that they've given me a tentative release date.

 

Welp, there was the presale on Amazon a few years ago but that went nowhere.

 

Round and round we go where it stops somebody should know! I have one, thanks.

 

Looks like I should hold on to both of my 5th editions. These were 39.95 plus tax when new.
Might I add that there weren't many photos of variety's online at the time. They were a great reference for a newbie variety collector.

 

I personally haven't used either of mine in years, I usually just check internet resources. I bought Volume I 5th Edition on preorder for my birthday, however many years ago that was.

Article from Feb 10, 2020, right? Seems like there was some stuff that happened between then and that August.

Some projects have gotten back on their feet since then, though...

 

Thefe are quite a few errors as well dis information in the CPG. All one needs to do is vo on line and do a search.
I believe that the main issues with getting a new CPG to the press and out to the public.
Is simple how many varieties are there in the book? Qhat about the person whom discovered that variety wants a royalty of money for the useage of their find as well their name.
That's a lot of math to do to pay off those whom have copyright thier work.

 

I don't think you can copyright a variety discovery. Your images of it, yes. Your article about it, sure. How are you going to "trademark" an RPD that anyone else can see? All they have to do is take their own images of it. If you want your name up in lights for having discovered it, that's up to you. They're not going to pay you for it.

The part that a lot of cherrypickers probably don't realize is that as a contributor they ask you for the value figures to put in the book (because you're the "expert"). If it's never been published before, there's no data on that at all. It's just somebody's wild guess.
