Whoa, hang on guys, that's NOT my collection. It's just a set of images that somebody compiled. I thought it was interesting to compare them year-by-year.

Well. It's better than this one. I don't recall aliens participating in the Olympics. o_O

you would think that they would get some great sculptors together and come up with some great modern designs for the modern medals but it has just been getting worse and worse. not sure where I heard it that the gold medals are NOT solid gold either. maybe gold plated silver ???

The gold medals are 92.5% silver, plated with 6 grams of gold.

    Thanks for posting this, JA!

For anyone who might be interested in some of the older Olympic medals, Victor Gadoury's book, Olympic Medals and Coins: 510 B.C. - 1994 is packed with all sorts of information and (black & white) photos of all of the awards & official medals.

I should point out that, in addition to the individual award medals, there are other specimens that were offered as "official medals" for each Olympics. Some of my favorites were designed by Louis Oscar Roty and Jules Clement Chaplain for the 1900 Olympics which was held in conjunction with the Universal Exposition (World's Fair) in Paris.

Hey Chris, thanks for the heads-up on that book. I was not aware of its existence. Now I'm on a hunt for it - apparently, like so many numismatic texts, it's not exactly sold at every magazine stand.
