This is the first in a series of threads I hope to start asking the fine members of CoinTalk their opinions on a coin I have already sent to CAC for review. Please let me know what you think, such as: Will it fail to CAC, and why? Will it be a green or gold CAC sticker? What (negative) issues does the coin have? What positive attributes does the coin have? Is the strike good or bad? Is the toning pretty or ugly? etc If you don't know what CAC is, and are curious, see here: http://www.caccoin.com/ If you don't like CAC, and you think it's ruining the hobby, please still tell me what you think about my coin, but I'd like this not to devolve into an anti-CAC vs. pro-CAC brawl. CAC puts stickers on the A and B coins. Up for consideration if a 1958 Franklin Half PCGS MS66. PCGS TrueView pics:
I think the line across the toning behind the head is distracting. Not sure how it looks in hand as this doesn't show up in the cert photos. Otherwise the toning is absolutely beautiful.
I am a CAC authorized submitter; my take is any problem it will not sticker. Eye appeal is critical. Rarely do they do the controversial gold sticker unless it is cut and dried, and they surely rarely gold sticker any coin that has been certified in the last few years unless the upgrade wouldn't make that much difference. I doubt it is worth doing CAC unless the coin is worth $500 or more or needs the CAC generated attention at auction, etc..
Why would it need to get a CAC sticker? MS-66 with a great patina is enough to warrant any premium that a CAC sticker would give it without the added cost for this date.
The averages for submitters is well under 30% success on CAC submissions. The $12.50 cost per coin becomes $50 per coin if you are getting 1/4 results, plus shipping and other costs. Don't waste your money.
http://www.cointalk.com/threads/smoothing.236683/ As nice as the TrueView are (amazing really), my photos (the two slab pics), are more representative of how the coin looks in hand. Yes, you can see the odd toning arc on the coin.
That is why I am doing this, most CAC submitters including dealers and auction companies don't both with coins < $250. As a CAC Type collector, I have managed to find some very nice coins in my price range, but not a ton. There are other people like me, or at least I am guess there are. So I am attempting to fill the gap. "Affordable CAC coins". I may succeed, I may fail, or more likely, it will work but not enough to justify the time and effort. I appreciated your comments.
This coin, and many others, already shipped out. I have another 26 coins ready to go out the door. Since I only pay shipping and insurance on the failed coins, I am hoping I don't get anywhere near the $50 mark, but we'll see. I should know if two weeks on first batch. Also, many of the coins I sent are from my Childhood, so to me the only cost really is the submission fee. Still, this is all a risk, and I am normally risk-adverse. I have not been sleeping lately.
not a big fan of true views as I have seen many in hand that did not look like the true views....seems like the true views are much better and enhance the coin and then when you get the actual coin your disappointed. My opinion.
New numbers from CAC (JA ) say around 40% submissions sticker, but obviously most of these coins are initially vetted by dealers and advanced collectors before submitting, so when a newb like me submits, I am guessing the % goes down until I get a feel for it.
I so agree, but only for toned coins. Blast white coins look as good in hand as the TrueViews show, but toned coins tend to look better in pics than reality.
Thanks for everyone who participated in this thread. Results are in: Drum Roll...... This one passed!
