I think the set is much more complicated to complete than a Morgan set. One can build a decent Morgan in 1 or 2 national shows with little online auction help, the same can not necessarily be said for Trade Dollars esp if you add the decent caveat. Here is my Registry of Trade Dollars to show what a decent set looks like, it took years to complete.

The 1895 is not considered part of the set, normally as it is a proof issue. They are almost impossible to find without taking a mortgage on one.

I agree that Morgans are a pretty easy to complete because of the availability, but it is also an expensive set. Trade dollars on the other hand require a bit more searching, but a complete set is not that hard to do. I did a set of trade dollar proofs in less than two years (minus the 1884 and 1885 of course). Though I will admit that proof trades are fairly readily available.

Beautiful set you have there BTW.

    bdunnse Who dat?

Don't mean to impugn anybody's method of coin collecting, but why does a person spend time and effort (and money) into putting together a set, then just turn around and sell it. Was it just an investment? By the time you finished you were sick of them (lol)? Or what?

And yes, btw, that is a cool set!!!

You may want to move to the half dollar sets. The Walkers are a fun set to collect and you can get most for a fairly reasonable price.

I am sure everybody has their reasons for selling off completed sets. For me, it was the ability to generate a certain amount of cash that I would not have otherwise to buy other coins that I am collecting. There are very few completed sets that I have kept as once they are done, they are done.

finishing a coin set is not really any type of accomplishment. it just means those people have a lot of money to spend on coins.

Some sets may require a lot of money, but that in no way makes a set easy to complete. Key date coins in the desired grade may not be available, and it can be difficult to acquire that last coin needed to complete the set. Trying to put together a set is setting a goal for yourself in a hobby you enjoy. It can be very time consuming and requires patience.

Tell that to the people who worked hard to acquire the coins. This is a spam comment above. ^^

I enjoy working on sets, it's like the thrill of the game. The last coins I needed for my Morgan set was the 1885 CC and 1894P, I felt like a small child once that set was complete and also had the same feeling when I finished my Washington Quarter set. Doesn't have anything to do with money, I decided what I wanted to purchase and chose coins.

Really?? Im gonna say say your totally wrong...it takes work. That is if you are not just picking up anything...just because it's the date you need. Yes, it does take money...that's definitely true. I know people who don't have anything for$ but have an almost complete set. Yes complete.

Well, yea of course. That's why i said i assumed he didn't mean the PF...buy i wasn't going to totally assume i don't know them personally. In VG it's gotta be around 23-25g's. So yes..definitely out of reach for many...including myself.

no. if i had the money, i could find the coins. no problem. i see many nice coins offered for sale, you just don't know how or where to look for the coins. but without the money to buy them that does not mean much. but i guess in fairytale world it is possible to complete a morgan dollar collection with no money or almost no money. how did you develop those fantasies? and that is just what your comments are, fantasies.
