You might be right Doug...now that you mention it I see a darker grey throughout those areas. Typically, that means luster breaks in a photo. I would love to view this coin in hand and see where exactly the luster goes. Too bad Indiana is so far away.
ok guys... time for my view having the coin in hand. I actually think ANACS got this right. These holders were right after the small white ones and still in the range where I had some respect for ANACS as a company. The coin does have a couple of small luster breaks across the face and the breast of the eagle. If it was a coin I owned personally I would give it a shot at crossing at either NGC or PCGS.... but alas this coin is on consignment
I think it's good at AU58, too. Your super-duper zoom shows the wear in the hair. Some of that is glare, to be fair, not wear. But I don't care. It's there.
Real hard to tell...I mean they are pics. But id say its pretty solid..the wear in key places etc...real nice key CC!!! You should be proud to have it in your collection...I would!
Not that I could afford such a piece right now (plus, I'm married so even I could...I probably couldn't buy it)...do you know what he's going to want you to sell it for? If you don't mind me asking.
We have an AU55 1889 CC on the way back from NGC I'll add pictures of it when it comes in. This will be a good comparison as to what is passing for a 55 these days.
I don't know how you can tell that from this - maybe from any - picture. Reflection sure seems to make it difficult to tell what's what.
Sometimes they call that cabinet friction and make the grade higher. Personally I thought when I first saw the thread I thought it was over graded mainly because the big ol' pictures did not show much luster but on the outer edges. I will take Matts word for it on the grade.
I think ANACS got it right , the contact marks in the fields don't look like bag marks but circulation marks . Also wear on the hair over the ear . Still one nice looking coin if the luster is there .
