Dishonest and unprofessional seller. Your situation sounds like a good example of where a negative feedback is completely warranted. I'm guessing the sale price was below market value and he didn't want to let it go for that little amount of money. Whatever the case, he deserves to get hit with lowest feedback score possible.

... things do "get lost in the mail". I have a pic I'll try to dig up that illustrates that point well. If he dropped it and it somehow takes 3 weeks to find its way through the USPS to you, that's not his fault. He's not King of the Post Office. If, however, he didn't send it for 3 weeks ... well, that's completely unacceptable and (it just so happens) against eBay's policies, and he can and should be held accountable for a screwup of that magnitude.

i agree with both of you. but getting my money back wasnt really an option for me, i cant find this coin anywhere else. literally. and when this crazy seller has 4 sitting in a BIN listing, but says he wishes he could send me "another"...that really chapped my cheeks. i put quotes on "another" because i dont believe he ever sent it the first time. i also have been checking that BIN listing, he never reduced it by one either.

My dad likes to tell a story about how he sent a similar letter way back in the day that took several years to find its way back to him ... and when it did it had a rubber-stamped message on it: "Found In Supposedly Empty Machinery". Now, besides the fact that it took several years to get back to him, he was most amused by the fact that it apparently happens often enough that they made a STAMP for finding things after who-knows-how-long in "supposedly empty machinery". ;)

Depending on how long ago this was, you may still be able to file a formal claim. He should have the screws put to him for that. I would also point out the fact that he has 4 others up as a BIN to the good people of PayPal. They don't eff around.

As for the OP, I've had some delays from the east coast recently, but that's completely understandable.

I think 5 business days is a reasonable span. That basically gives someone a calendar week. I don't really think there is a "normal" reason that it should take this long. Honestly, I have only sold a couple things on eBay and with the ease or printing off a label...there really isn't much need to even go to the post office. I think on every item I sold...I dropped in the mail the next business day.

That said, I think 5 business days should be enough time. I can't think of a good reason for someone not to be able to get to the post office within a calendar week.

5 days is MORE than enough time. And like u said Richie, with eBay and PayPal they make it so simple these days to get things out in a reasonable time that MOST sellers should not need more than three days.

Here's an interesting story. I bought a 1914-D Lincoln a couple weeks ago on eBay. When the package arrived, out came a 1914-D $10 Indian. Long story short I sent it back to him (boy was he relieved :D) and finally got my Lincoln about 2.5 weeks after I paid.

Another reason why delays can happen. Accidents happen.

I think people are actually being overly generous on feedback in this thread. If a seller doesn't ship the coin within the total estimated shipping time indicated in the listing, I'm either going to leave a 4 star or less rating for speed of shipment or just not leave any feedback at all. So if the listing has a delivery estimate of 3-4 days, and the coin isn't even marked as shipped within that time period, I'm going to lower my feedback rating. I say that as a frequent eBay seller too - I would expect the same treatment if I didn't ship a coin within my 1 day handling period.

    I agree with Volante.

You guys are being too generous.

I can accept 5 days or 7 or what ever, IF the seller says so in his listing.

I have seen many time 'the seller is away and will shop on X date'.

So if you can't get to the PO then say so. That would be find.

I accept that (as someone stated) that they are away at work and don't want to lose a day's pay to mail a package. Then say so. I only mail on Tuesdays and Fridays, what ever.

    But say so.

Communication....communication....communication. I've had very good luck buying coins on ebay. I read feedback on sellers I've never used and take it with a grain of salt.

The second I buy it, either BIN or auction I pay immediately. 95% of sellers will give me good payment feedback very soon, and usually about the same time they print their shipping labels. I thus know it's in the works. It might take them 1-3 days for it to actually get processed at the PO but I know it is progressing.

One deal I had showed nothing for 7 days(5 working days). I was going to give it 2 weeks and then contact him. It finally showed shipped on day 7 and arrived a few after that. I left him neutral feedback.

I am sure some will cry foul that I left neutral. Why? I am certainly not going to leave positive. I won't leave negative because it did arrive in as described condition so I wasn't defrauded. Neutral is middle ground. Not good, not bad. That's what the deal was. A simple communication would have let me know it would take that long to ship. 10 seconds at best. If you can't give me the courtesy(professionalism) of a quick note then you won't get a courtesy of a positive review back.

It's not about wanting that coin right NOW. It's about knowing the transaction is progressing smoothly and simple communication goes a long way to keep everyone happy.

Communication and shared expectations both ways can be great for any transaction. It is rare that I sell on ebay, but if someone orders something off my website it is typically in the mail the next business day. They only reason it isn't out that day is that I keep everything in safe deposit boxes and would then have to get to the bank and ship the coin during business hours.

    definer definitely....! LOL

I don't sell a ton on ebay, but when I do, I package the item the day of the sale and it's gets dropped in the mailbox the next day (usually). I think it's fair to expect low volume sellers to ship reasonably quickly. Also, realize that some sellers are really doing nothing more than working with drop shippers (though I know this doesn't apply to coins) and are at the mercy of the drop shipper as to when the order gets shipped. High volume sellers may have hundreds of items to ship and it make sense to give them a little extra time.

Overall I agree with the 5 business day concept but be sure to communicate before you render a judgement. If the seller has had a problem with slow shipping, it will show up in their feedback - look at it before your bid.

Thats a valid point, and one that happens from time to time. Fortunately, like most people on earth today, I have a cell phone which I can use to communicate with the buyer. I think most buyers would understand if the seller were courteous enough to leave a message saying, hey, I may not be able to ship for a few days while I'm out of town. Communication between the two parties is essential, especially if they expect my future business. But it goes both ways, remember.

I think this is true. I really do. It shouldn't take more than a couple days MOST of the time. My general rule is a full calendar week when I buy. If it goes out in that time-frame...I don't get upset. If it doesn't I start contacting the seller.
