Hi, I am one coin away from completing my Morgan set.In case your wondering its the 1887/6 philedelphia .
My question is it easy to tackle the trade dollars next? I know the set is short but expensive and I already have 2 coins (graded) I can't afford au/ bu coins so it is a challenge to find nice detail free coins.
I already have a peace and Eisenhower sets so I guess just looking for any tips for the trade series which I know relatively little besides to stick with certified to avoid fakes.

Ok looks like it's a date set with a few full dates/mints. Still nice. Have you ever thought about upgrading your sets? To higher grades? That's what i would do...

Also, getting your sets in TPG plastic...all pcgs or ngc. So, if say upgrade both your sets to higher grades and into plastic.

For done reason i thought i was talking to the original thread starter...ooops. Well...you sold them off? Too expensive? Your gonna spend it on something right?? Why not have a direction? To each his own...i suppose.

Congratulations on the impressive task of completing (almost) your Morgan set. Doing a trade dollar set is not as difficult as completing a Morgan set. Beware of impressive trade dollar fakes though, some are very convincing.

Having done one complete and three partial Morgan sets, I think a good idea would be to branch out to other dollar sets--the Peace Dollar complete only has three difficult dates--1921, 1928 and 1935. There are other conditional difficult ones as well, but nothing like the Morgans.---a very nice 1928 can be had for $1000 or less. Not true for Morgans for sure. My compete set that I sold 5 years ago was well into six figures in terms of price received. It was MS, except for the 93s and 89cc. The killer for me was the 84s in MS condition, and I lucked out, as an estate sale got me one way under market. So, I would say Peace Dollars in low level MS for the key coins, and MS 65 for the common dates, or perhaps a short set of other older dollars.

Oddly enough after selling my complete Morgan set, I got another 89cc and 93s, and decided to go for toned Morgans and specialized (PL and DMPL) coins, and no longer worried about having every date. I also went for something easy---did the entire Kennedy set in mid-high MS in a Dansco, and some nice slabbed better date coins. My JFK set has been posted here a few times. Ike dollars are also fun, and very easy to get a nice MS set at reasonable cost.

If I get a chance I'll take a few pics this weekend... I'm new to these forums so I'm not sure how to upload the pics yet.
My 1879 cc is in the mail but it is bought so I consider it there....
About 1/3 of my set is slabbed.... So yes I've thought about upgrading some of my raw coins..... Its taken me over 2 years of scraping and saving... Thankfully my local dealer likes me he let's me buy coins on layaway... So the spendier coins I can make payments.
He doesn't get many slabbed trade dollars in so I have to go to eBay and other sources. So that's why I've been buying slabs and I verify the coins on pcgs and NGC so I don't get fake slabs.

Completing a Morgan set of any kind is a feat. Im Assuming your not talking about the 1895?? Many don't consider that a requirement. I got into VAMS 6 months ago and i LOVE it! So much to learn...you learn so much the Morgan dollar (Peace too) and there are VAM sets and subsets (Top 100, hitlist 40, hot 50, elite clashed, 7tf, 8tf, wow, overdates etc) some of which if you can complete (unlikely) you will be known in the numismatic community for a long time. Its definitely a fun time, great to hunt for them and pick a killer!

That 79cc is a key...just like but not as much as the 89cc. Oh yes this hobby we all into is very expensive! I got robbed afew months ago and had about 200 morgans alone taken. I've gotten two back thankfully. You can still get fake slabs...they use actual cert# from same cons. Yea it sucks. But they have their security measure on the slabs...especially pcgs...they have theirnew slabs. (very nice).you just gotta be careful and know what your looking at.

No 1895, there is just no way I could ever afford that. But like you said it is not a circulation strike. I can take a pic of the last 5 coins I've gotten... One was a hard one..took me almost 2 months to pay off.
