Anyone else find that they are buying more NGC coins than PCGS recently?

Am I the only one, or has anybody else found that as of recent, some of the nicest coins are coming on the market in NGC slabs as opposed to PCGS ones? I have always concentrated on both companies in buying slabbed coins and treated them as absolutely equal, but as of recent, I find myself drawn more and more to NGC coins. Is it just my imagination, or is NGC making a good play for first place?? Please feel free to share experiences in this regard.

It's funny that you mention it. I've noticed that a lot of coins that I've been buying have been slabbed by NGC. I'm not necessarily partial to either company, it just seems that many of the people I'm buying from are going with NGC. I've been told a lot of reasons why, but mostly I've just heard that they are easier to deal with.

I think as long as PCGS keeps their registry "closed", there will always the bias in the marketplace for those collectors using that registry. Now add the "CAC" sticker to the equation and in some people's minds, you have the utopia of a coin grade. Let me just be clear that I don't subscribe to that theory as it's been well documented that TPG's make mistakes as well as CAC. We are all human.

Personally, when I make a decision to bid/buy a coin, I make my entire decision on the coin, not the slab it's in. My last statement assumes that I'm looking to buy only those coins slabbed by NGC or PCGS.

I personally like NGC more than PCGS. Many of my most recent purchases have been in NGC holders. I don't know the reason. Could be more coins being sent to NGC, more coins in NGC holders being liquidated by their owners, but I still see a ton of PCGS coins being auctioned by the major auction houses.

The coin in my avatar resides in a PCGS holder with a CAC sticker. I didn't buy it for that reason, but I'm pleased with the TPG, the 4th opinion and the fact that it's beautiful and in my collection.

When it comes to world coins, I think NGC is more likely to give your coins a better grade than PCGS. I saw lots of world coins in NGC holders that were overgraded imo. Sellers love that.

We probably purchase about 50% of our coins in holders, yet never pay attention to the holder . . . the coin says it all . . . always.

With that expressed, I suspect there are many factors that drive the number of submissions to each company, not the least of which is the value of the rendered service.

Disagree. They are tougher on Morgans often.

Could be, that's why I said world coins (foreign, not US).

It's a well known fact that PCGS is tougher than NGC on some types of coins and NGC is tougher than PCGS than other types. Neither is tougher across the board on all coins. That said, I don't think I personally have bought more NGC than PCGS lately...at least not noticeably.

there are definitely more NGC coins than PCGS. and amen for that. if you do a search on ebay, NGC far outnumbers PCGS.

I have been selling off my NGC nickels and replacing them with PCGS slabs. IMO, NGC is less strict on Jefferson nickels than PCGS from my experiences. I am sure they are more strict in other denominations though. There are just a lot more NGC slabs out there, but many times I see PCGS slabs bringing a slight premium. Again, I am no expert and have very limited collecting experience, but this is my observation from my world.

In my two main niche areas (gem type and circulated type) I find that my purchases are skewed heavily toward PCGS. For gem type it can be near impossible to sell an NGC certified coin to my client base, but for circulated type it is not so extreme.

for me i more like95% more.. I stopped buyin raw coins point blank... unless I can trust the dealer/// and I definitely don't buy raw off of ebay that's like using a broken rubber with a prost...... and expecting not to catch a std......

Why do you think this is? Do you specialize in a particular coin design that PCGS is known to grade more accurately or do collectors consider gem coins more accurate in PCGS slabs across the board?

When I see threads like this asking about trends in my collection, I love to break out Excel and use pivot tables. Quick and easy, and no guess work.

For my entire collection, here are the stats:

    NGC.....94
    PCGS....42

    Heavily in favor of NGC.

HOWEVER, if I only consider my CAC Type coins, which is mostly only what I buy lately:

    NGC.....8
    PCGS.....13

So, I am starting to lean the other direction, but not necessarily intentionally. I consider any CAC coin I can afford.

This is going to sound like heresy, but the only slab I avoid are the PCGS first gen rattler holders. I just don't like them, sold the ones I had, and actively avoid bidding on coins with them. They bounce around too much in my boxes.

Folks do not have to agree with me. However,my experience with gem and near-gem Barber, Seated, Reeded Edge, Capped Bust and odd denomination nineteenth century coinage is that the window for grading standards overlaps somewhat, but is not the same between PCGS and NGC. The no-line fatty NGC holders had a more strict standard, in my experience, than subsequent NGC holders and this more strict standard better matches what PCGS has maintained over the years.

In other words, on average there are slightly nicer coins in PCGS holders vs. in NGC holders for this niche and both liquidity and value within the broader market show that this experience is not unique to me and my clients.

Interesting. This is not an area where I collect...so I don't know much about those coins. I would imagine you are correct as you deal with them so frequently.

Same here. I don't at all deal with Barber coinage, so I can't speak for those series. I can speak for dollars, and the star designation definitely helps in terms of toned Morgan and Peace dollar values.
