I would say he sent it to PCGS, and they didn't grade it like he thought they would, so it was a shot in the dark when he bought it, and a shot in the dark for bidders.

I too see nothing wrong with this. IMO it's better than buying raw because you know it's problem free. I'm guessing AU53-55 but that's my novice guess. I say no way MS and not a chance at PL. The only thing I don't like is the insinuation that it might be PL which it obviously didn't grade based upon the space whited out. But if you choose to believe them that's on you. Heck, I don't need this coin but I may bid for fun. As long as it doesn't go for more than $40 it's no big deal IMO.

No, it's not an "honest" sale by any stretch of the imagination, and the seller most certainly is using the gimmick in hoping for a higher close. I am not so sure the photos are altered in the way you do, but perhaps they are. Still, and while I am not defending this guy or his listing practices, I just don't see it as being that bad, especially when compared to some of this other offerings, which clearly prove him a schmuck. Here is a dandy if you can get past the headache-inducing multi-colored text:

Just another squirrel trying to get a nut. :D Or in Ebay jargon, seller is trying to get some attention to increase his profit margin. I wouldn't do it but I wouldn't bid on his coins either. I guess you could say I'm totally unimpressed. :D

I agree with you...it's not that bad. I have seen far worse.

Not as bad as that one scheisskopf who constantly re-rolls coins and puts one good coin on an end of junk, or advertises "police seizure" collections as nothing but crap he has graded him/herself.

I find it interesting but very strange. Why spend the cash to grade the coin and the sell it basically raw? I'm going to bid on it AU-55 value, but I would bet that it will sell at MS63 or 64 money.

Well, the seller makes an interesting offer. Make a request, for example daytime, natural light, no tampering with photos please, etc. You still have almost 7 days.;)

    definer definitely....! LOL

How do you know it's "problem free?" I wouldn't consider it because of the black and white pictures of a "toned coin." that makes me think that the toning is more extensive (damaging) and the photos were taken to deliberately obscure it. I would pay no more than melt for it.

My guess is, the person who submitted it couldn't tell the difference between a poor strike and wear. They probably thought it would get MS and in fact got AU. 1889-O are known to have poorer strikes...so someone who isn't overly knowledgeable could easily have made that mistake.

The seller believes the coin to be MS-PL...but I'll bet PCGS did not believe the same.

It says the coin graded...meaning it got a grade (not graded genuine). So, PCGS believed it is problem free.

    Someone said to the seller:

    The seller responded:

I get the feeling the seller doesn't agree with the grade and is trying to make up for that by selling it in this way.

all this back and forth. nobody has to bid at all. scam/no scam so what, bid or don't bid.

I agree with you. It seems like a dirty trick. I wouldn't go as far as using the word scam either, but he's definitely testing the waters to see if he can get someone to overpay. I'm pretty certain he wouldn't white out the grade if it was a high grade. I'm also certain he won't continue this tactic if the selling price is consistently lower than the coins are worth. It sure is a dirty trick.

I'd agree with you if he hadn't mentioned that "We have Graded it OUR Grade and PCGS has Given it Their Grade" several times. To me, this means that the grade he gives it and the grade PCGS gives are different. Maybe the seller is just having fun.

Lets say the seller thought the coin was a MS63PL when he submitted it...and it came back graded AU55. That's a huge price difference. MS63PLs of this coin tend to sell in the $450-$500 range...AU55s tend to sell in the $50-$60 range. A tiny bit of wear on a coin that is normally poorly struck can be easy to miss by the untrained eye but make all this difference.

Exactly. I'm confident in saying the only fun he's trying to have is from putting more money in his pocket.

As Camaro states, he also makes it clear that he doesn't agree with the grade. I wouldn't be surprised if this is his quirky way of trying to start a revolt against TPG's.
