The U.S. Mint sucks more than most government agencies.

If you were to Google “Abusive monopoly” the U.S. Mint should come up as the primary example.

This is generally sound advice, especially for newcomers, those not well versed in the series, and/or not willing to do their homework, but it would also wise to realize that some....

While there are those who are truly knowledgeable and generously share with the membership, others seemingly have agendas and/or are not quite as advanced as they may come across as being. As friendly as it may seem, this is a mostly anonymous forum, and as the old saying goes, “it takes all kinds”, so the best things one can do is read between the lines and verify, verify, verify and, of course, learn for yourself.

Coin collectors are nice people...but I knew that before.

Well yeah, there are some nice ones out there. But, money and collecting it are driven by greed, so beware.

Knowledge from all. Everyone has a different way of teaching all, who want to learn. No question asked, then no correct answer can be discovered or learned. I enjoy the sight, and learn.
You can be one, who collect coin/currency for fun and knowledge, or be a coin dealer who knows what coins and currency are, or then an investor, and the last, are some who are sellers of coins and currency, who know nothing about them, except to make a huge profits on items, and some with fake coins and currency. Enough said.

I'm in a similar business but I collect coins I may make a business of it someday but I got a lot to learn before I feel comfortable doing this that being said having owned now 2 businesses for the last 21 years there's a lot of good people out there but there's some real bad apples too enjoy the good ones but always beware of the bad as to coin talk there seems to be a great majority of the good guys here

As to raw trade dollars don't buy them unless you really know what your doing my best advice buy a couple good slabbed ones first from a trustworthy seller study the series study real coins study fake coins and problem coins (just don't buy them) and don't trust slabbed coins either trust a quality knowledgable seller best advice is be knowledgable and be careful on these coins which I feel are one of the best prettiest us coins ever made!

Very true, there are many very good people here on coin talk, but there are dishonest ones as well. Don’t believe me, try posting a question about a coin you have and know a lot about, but pretend you know nothing and watch the sharks descend, making ridiculous offers via PM.

I never had that happen here, however years ago i took a photo of 10 1932 D quarters and put them on craigslist for sale as junk silver. I think 2 people out 20 told me they were key dates, the rest were relentless in trying to contact me.

I've learned a lot here, I can't even remember it all. I should have take a polaroid of what I looked like as a collector or 2006, just so I can look back and see how deficient I was. :D

I do remember having some strong opinions that are polar opposite of how I now feel. For example, I used to think PCGS slabs were hideous, now I like them just fine. I used to think collecting by Type was idiotic, as I collected the Kennedy series by date, but now I collect by Type. I used to think proofs were the ultimate, now I greatly prefer business strikes. When I bought my first CAC coin, it was by accident, I liked the coin and had no idea what CAC was, now I'm a major CAC fanboy.

My point being, I've evolved (devolved?) my coin hobby dramatically in a few years. probably 95% of what I know about coins, how I think and feel about this hobby, was and is directly influenced by the threads here. Still so much to learn...

Just like anyone who thinks they are always right is a fool, anyone who thinks there is not a lot left to learn is foolish. I know I am wrong on some issues, I have to be, I just don't know which ones. However, I am with you and have educated myself to know how little I do know.

Its a hobby, and the pleasure is in the journey, not the destination.

The biggest lesson would be to collect what I like and what makes me happy and don't be ashamed of my collection...even if it does consist of Presidential Dollars ;)

Giving credit to where it is due, I think I owe a tip of the hat to rlm's cents with his guess the grade series. I may not always respond openly in the threads, but that series really inspired me on my current endeavor of Lincoln cents and significantly aided in the grading aspect.

I learned there are a lot more people out there that enjoy collecting coins, both as a hobby and as an investment, than I thought. Where I live, I only know of one other collector, and there is only one piddly coin shop here that sells junk. This forum helped me realize my hobby, which I have only been in for less than 2 years, is still alive and well, though it's not the same hobby as when my grandfather collected. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be a collector. He died in 1980, but his collection inspired me to collect.

    1) that i would rather have one amazing coin instead of 100 mediocre ones.
    2) patience and adhering to a goal for obtaining a coin

Living in Vegas rocks. We have coin shows all the time. Pcgs only show is here multiple times a year. It has been 6-8 years since I set foot in a coin shop. My wife took me to see Britney last night for my birthday. Nothing ever closes. No state income taxes. Extremely high pay for licensed professionals of almost any type. Very low cost of living. Consider moving dude
