Being a newbie to CT, thought I'd ask the more knowledgeable, about these Some of the figures I've read are: 1958 Philly type 2 - 30% of mintage, approx 1.126M 1959 Philly type 2 - 70% of mintage , approx 4.34M From these numbers, wouldn't the 1959 Type 1 garner the same interest, as the 1958 Type 2 ? Please feel free to comment, correct & objectify. Again, I'm new to this site but have a been collecting for a half century Thanks, Ole GMG3
Referenced through a Mr. Tepper in April 1990, Wikipedia sourced If you have any corroborating or info , I'd Be honored to know it Thank you
Probably the best thread ever on CT: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-type-ii-reverse-franklin.72184/ Numbers estimated at 20% (1958) and 35% (1959). TC
Mintage estimates are all over the map depending upon who you talk to. In my opinion, the market provides the best evidence of scarcity or lack thereof. I'd pay more attention to that than anything else
What I do not understand is why the Cherrypicker's Guide and the TPGs do not attribute this MAJOR variety. There is a lot of interest in them. Many on CT and other coin forums collect them. I have also talked to dealers at shows and as soon as you ask to see 1958/1959 Franklins, they will say sorry none are Type 2. TC
More often than not, a very unreliable source of information. Even Red Book doesn't provide any mintage figures for these in the coin section for Franklins, so I'd say those figures in your OP, are guesstimates at best.
I just read the quoted thread and out of curiosity looked at a couple of my Franklins I had laying around the computer. I actually have a 1959 Type II in PF65 graded by NGC. I paid $35 for it! I don't believe the seller knew what he had!
I have one as well, mine was $25. As Doug stated, these are too common for attribution from TPGs, and many dealers do not even try adding a premium for them because they are so common.
Agreed. However, they seem to attribute other equally or more common varieties (e.g., type b quarters, friendly eagle Ike dollars). TC
And if enough people ask or complain about it they'll attribute these too. For an extra $25-$30 of course.
I believe the "varieties" you are mentioning/discussing are demonstrated on business strikes and not necessarily proofs as all proofs are Type II. I may attempt to post pics of mine when I get home from work. Hope that makes sense and happy hunting!
You may have a misconception. The 58 and 59 Type 2's are typical for the proofs for those years. It's the Type 2 business strikes that are the varieties for those years. However, proofs from 56 do come in both varieties. What you (and I) want to find is a Type 1 Proof for any year from 57 to 63.
