Hello all, I am Tom, and new to this forum. I will introduce myself later, because now I want to go straight to the topic. I've recently discovered some bad-looking spots on my bronze medals. So, I have started to search internet and look for help. My eyes stopped upon Verdi-Care product, then I found this forum and now I have a question. Will Verdi-Care help to eliminate or stop growth of these spots ? Or, is there any other way to stop growth or eliminate these spots? Awaiting your answer, Cheers P.S. English is not my mother-tongue-language. Forgive me if I make grammar mistakes.
No it will not. Verdi-Care is for the removal of verdigris, your coins have no verdigris. The spots you see could be caused by any of several things, tiny saliva droplets, small specks of organic material like paper, cardboard dust, even tiny flakes of dead human skin - anything that may gotten on the coin at some point in its life, and then toned to that coloration. About the only way there is to remove the spots would be to dip the coin, and thus remove all toning, or at the very least most of it. Growth of the spots is not really an issue as you can greatly slow down any additional toning/discoloration with proper storage. You can never stop toning completely, but you can slow it down so much that you will likely not see any noticeable changes in your lifetime - with proper storage.
I agree with Doug. Any attempt to remove those spots will end badly for the coin. The best thing you can do is rinse it with acetone or xylene, put it into an airtite and then add some additional layers for storage. Beautiful coin BTW - I like it just how it is.
I would agree. You can search for threads here detailing how to add additional protection to keep coins from toning. Btw OP, the poster above me is the owner of Verdicare in case you didn't know. He is singularly the most authoritative person on its use, so if he says do not use it please do not.
And you definitely do NOT want to try that. The bronze will come out with a very unnatural color. I would probably not try that either. Often these medals would have a patina applied to them by the mint. I would not be confident that even acetone would not harm that patina.
Thank you for your information and advice. I am relieved it is not Verdigris. I am not a big fan of various chemicals, so I will stay away from acetone and xylene. Now I have to find the optimal storage solution. I will be reading this forum maybe I will find some useful and interesting info.
It's pretty simple. Use the search button with storage as your key word, and type in my name in the box that says posted by member. You'll find all you could ever want to read.
Btw MyHobby, yeah, GDJMSP(Doug) is pretty modest...... Seriously, Doug has been the backbone of this site for over a decade. There is precious little most of us disagree with him about. If you read a post of his, please pay attention.
