Ok, I was just browsing the SEGS thread and @jello mentioned a Mr Cline for grading, so I clicked the link and saw that he was a SLQ man. I am highly interested in the series and wanted to know more about J.H. Cline and if the reference book on SLQs was informative and worth the money.

Thanks for any help and input!

I don't know personally if the book is worth the money, but there are really virtually no references on the subject and Cline is one of the biggest SLQ dealers in the US.

I am looking for a copy of the book myself if I can find it cheap enough

I really like the coins and wouldnt mind reading up on them. I think i seen a Red Book on the series but I cant recall much of anything else on the SLQ

He is very knowledgeable in the series. I consider his book the standard reference for the series. He is also currently writing about SLQ for the grey sheet. His book is worth it if you truly want to learn about the series.
I would not recommend the redbook on the subject, it does not cover much.

The book is outstanding and provides you with almost everything you could possibly want to know about Standing Liberty Quarters. I do wish that the photos used to show the difference between partial head and full head were larger. As it is, you need a magnifying glass to see the relevant details in the photos. That is truly my only criticism of the book.

I have the book and a large collection of the quarters. Any book you get is a help. It has some insight into varieties, that are not in the Red Book, or any other general book or magazine. If you want a nice collection of St Qt. Pick the best you can now, for your budget. I have only to get the 1923s in a grade, that will take some time to acquire, next, a better 1921 and a 1927s. Not going after the 1916 or the 1918s over 1917s. Most that I have are AU50 to MS 65 FH. They are a beautiful set to put together.

I've been planning on upgrading my 20th c part of my type set (was pathetic my flowing hair dollar was better than any slq merc buff I had and until recent walking half!) im hoping to get a couple real outstanding examples of a slq but between a type set early dollars trades morgans and large cents along with any other nice early coin I can't afford to collect everything :)

As classy of coins you collect Bill, I am highly surprised you aren't sitting on a few Gem Full Heads. Boy are you missing out by not having a choice example of this coin.

My only regret is the design never carried over to the half dollar and dollar. Such a wasted opportunity.

So general consensus is that I should pony up the dollars for a copy of this book. Gotcha.

You ain't kidding I been pursuing the early stuff first my slqs are next for an upgrade current best coin is a vg!!! I just got 2 great walkers a pf 67 and just bought a ms 65 gold cac so I'm hoping when there's nothing good and early I can pick up a couple really well struck high grade slqs as I agree their a great design especially type one as to the design I like the walking liberty even better and like the peace too the only designs of that period I don't like is the Lincoln cent and the Indian $2.5 and $5 no fan of any of them

Was only gonna seriously collect a 18th and 19th c type set but the early 20th c designs are too great to ignore even if the prices in relation to the mintages seem to high for me I'm sorry I don't wanna pay $5k for a coin that's less than 100 years old and has a mintage a million more than a chain cent!!

This is a no brainer, in my opinion. For $21 you can have a boatload of information at your fingertips. JH Cline does all the larger shows and I have known him for years. Just look for the odd hat and he will talk to you about SLQs all you like.

Funny thing is I could care less about a chain cent. Lol. I guess I'm still too young to see those coin as practically attainable and so I largely ignore anything say pre-1830ish

Im sure this will change in the future as my income and knowledge increase. So far I'm happy (and limited to) buying coins in the $150-$300 range, occasionally throwing in a $500+ coin In the mix.

Haven't broke the $1K threshold for a coin yet.

A chain and a nice pine tree is at the top of my 2014 want list as to your price threshold you can buy a lot of nice capped bust silver and early large and half cents for under $300 and even under $150 and you can buy a decent draped bust quarter and half for $500 circulated but problem free me I've only broke the 5k mark once and never broke the 10k mark came close last year was a 1796 quarter vf details cleaning and a light not abrasive cleaning just glossy at $10,500 I had the money but couldn't pull the trigger was just too much for me for a coin so far if I was selling and could see a profit (like I do antiques) it'd been no problem but for myself and not to resell I just couldn't justify that kinda dough yet....

My first 1k coin was a flowing hair half in problem free vg-8 a couple years ago I've collected and been into coins almost my whole life but only started getting real serious again about 3 years ago was hugely interested growing up and through high school but had no money then getting my business going took over I always liked coins and picked them up whenever I ran across something decent but when I finally got an iPhone and the Internet it opened up being able to collect and buy the kind of coins I wanted but never saw

Oh, dont get me wrong I have some very pleasing coins in my collection, just not any of the super old and more rare coins.

I tend to gravitate more towards mint state coins and high circulated grades usually not falling below XF-40 for the most part. All in all ive managed to find some quality coins at reasonable prices.

Heres a few examples of what I like/have:

1879-P Seated Liberty Half Dollar PF-62
1876-S Seated Liberty Quarter MS-61 Proof Like
    1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter MS-61
    1942-P Walking Liberty Half PF-65
    1893-O Barber Quarter AU-50
    1908-O Barber Half XF-40
    1875-P Twenty Cent Xf-45
    1921-P Peace MS-62
    1928-P Peace MS-62
    1853-P Seated Quarter Arrows/Rays XF-45
    1853-P Seated Half Arrows/Rays XF-45
    1900-P Lafayette Dollar UNC DETAILS
    1899-O Morgan MS-63 PL
    1675-RB German Thaler VF-30
    1762 Netherlands 1 Gulden MS-61

I just sold a large portion of my coins, but I do still have the ones listed above and a few more goodies like a nice MS Large Cent, XF Capped Bust Half, Gem Morgan, some more quality Walkers, and a complete set of graded Washington quarters

Sounds like you have some real beauties many I'd be proud to own not a my coins are high end by any means is only the last couple years I've really been stepping up and buying higher end coins and then only a few a year I'm perfectly happy to buy a nice au trade dollar or a great toned Morgan for less than $500 too the ones that get expensive for me though are my favorite series the early dollars and there's a few coins i really want that I may never be able to afford namely a 1794 dollar a small eagle half and a Gobrecht dollar

I've been collecting for over 30 years and it took about 26 before I stepped up on anything higher end :)
