Question to you all. I recently bought one of those PCGS World Trade Center coins frm 9/11. The picture is just one to show what I'm talking about and not my actual ASE. The one I obought is my birth year 91. I've heard different sides to the story of where these come from and how legit they are. Are they really 9/11 recover coins? Does anyone have any other information of these slabs? Thank all :)

Never heard of these - not that I know much about anything

I suppose there is no way to know if they were really recovered from WTC. There may be some documents, but those could be falsified. Most convincing thing would be a video showing someone pulling them out of the rubble. Even still that could be faked.

SUPPOSEDLY they were pulled from the bullion vaults under the twin towers and PCGS was there to verify. This is one of the stories I was told. That's why I'm trying to find out more info. Some go for $600+! It was listed on ebay at $249 and all profits benefit a boy scout troop. I put in a best offer of $230 and he took it :)

That is an expensive label for a Unc. Bullion ASE

I uploaded a larger better quality picture. Still not mine. Mine's at the bank so I'm not going to drive there just for a picture.

$230? They usually don't go for over $150, and then those that do are graded.

Here's an MS69 that sold for $137 with post:

IMO, I think they are over priced. IDK how many silver eagles were pulled from the comex vaults, but there was over 900 tons of silver in the comex valuts.

BTW, the comex vaults were not under the twin towers, they were under WTC4 , a small 9 story building.

BTW, PCGS claims to have not kept a record of how many coins they shelled as WTC Recovery, I find that very hard to believe.

Personally I think there are literally tens of thousands of them, and they don't want to admit that because it would make the value take a crap.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but it sounds fishy.

    1) PCGS was supposedly there to verify
    2) profits go to boy scout troop
    3) seller took a best offer of $230 when the coin normally sells for "$600+"

Maybe you got a good deal, but something doesn't seem right.

It is a legit item but personally I would not pay a premium on a coin based on its location. I would just buy for the coin
Also my understanding is LOTS of them were recovered.

First of all silver eagles dated 1991 and before could not have been made from silver recovered from the WTC site. The Mint did not strike silver eagles from any silver recovered at the site.

These coins were not minted from silver recovered at ground zero in New York as others claim, these coins were actually there and buried under tons and tons of debris. That is why you see various dates on the silver eagles. The recovered coins were then sent to PCGS to be certified that they were recovered from the site.

The premiums for these recovery coins comes from the fact that they were retrieved from the site during the clean up. Thousands, possibly tens of thousands of these were specially labeled recvory coins but PCGS isn't saying exactly how many they did.

No problem, let me clarify. I have no idea if PCGS was there or not. It's what I was told by the owner of a very reputable local coin shop. The ebay seller is the leader of a boy scout troop. He buys things and sells them on ebay. The profits ago straight to his troop. (As was in the listing, who knows). And I didn't say this coin was worth $600. Some on ebay now are $560. He accepted $20 less than his asking. Even if I did over pay I'm happy with it and it's a great conservation piece although I know nothing about it haha

Sounds kinda morbid – selling souvenirs from the site of a disaster. What’s next, bone fragments?

Maybe the price will jump with the 9/11 truther taking over the MVP mic on the super bowl!
9/11 truth is trending on twitter and the web.

I like the coins. I know my dad has one. I want one but just can't find myself to pay $125+ on a silver eagle with very little information.

  19. Interesting piece of history, but not for me. There are a lot of ASE collectors out there that want every label so there should always be demand. The PCGS name makes them legit unlike other tributes on the market. You may want to check PCGS pop reports, but I think there are thousands of these out there. TC

These were recovered by the thousands from vaults located at or near the site of the disaster. PCGS had an agreement to certify them with the recovery labels. Also, AGEs and many foreign gold coins were also recovered and slabbed the same way. I have never owned one and cannot see myself buying one, but I understand that many folks find them quite cool.

I do, however, own one of the 100 PCGS certified NY State quarters that were give special 9/11 inserts after the tragedy and all the funds raised were donated to I believe the widows and orphans of NYC firefighters who perished in the act. These were organized and sold or auctioned off on the PCGS boards immediately after 9/11. These numbered state quarters are quite scarce, as mentioned, and I have seen ebay listings for them from time-to-time sell for quite a bit.

I bought a 1993 ASE like yours several months ago on ebay. It was stained and dirty and, if graded, would get a lower MS grade, but I got it for $53, and wanted it for the story behind it. I know there are those who poo poo on people paying much more than bullion price for ASE coins, but if you like it, buy it. Whether it was under tower 1, 2 or 9, it's still a neat piece of history.
